Book a time slot for Schönbrunn
Why it works. Schönbrunn Palace has the longest lines in Vienna. In season, palace tickets sell into afternoon slots by mid-morning. A ticket with a time slot lets you in at your time, however long the line is.
Do this. Book the first tour of the day before you travel, or go after three. The gardens are free and open at dawn.

Stephansplatz before 11:00, museums on Thursday evening
Why it works. Stephansplatz is fullest from 11:00 to 18:00. The Kunsthistorisches Museum has lines only on blockbuster weekends and is quiet on Thursday evenings.
Do this. Do the cathedral before 11:00. Save the big museum for a Thursday evening. Book the first slot for The Kiss at the Belvedere; the gardens outside need no ticket.

Do this. Pick One day, the big sights if you have one day; Start early, one ticket if you want to spend little; The quiet side if you want to skip the lines altogether.

Christmas markets in November, and know the Packed weeks
Why it works. The Christkindlmarkt at the Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December. November has 1 Busy or Packed day; December is Packed or Busy on all 31. The Erste Bank Open tennis runs from 24 October to 1 November, and New Year's Eve has the Silvesterpfad.
Do this. For the markets with fewer people, come in the second half of November. Check the day pages for the tennis week and New Year's Eve before you book.

Sleep near the Belvedere gardens
Why it works. Vienna's crowd keeps to Stephansplatz, the Graben and Kohlmarkt, Schönbrunn and the Riesenrad. The Belvedere gardens, the Prater's avenues, the Servitenviertel and the Zentralfriedhof stay quiet.

Why it works. The famous coffee houses have queues for tables at weekend brunch, and the Naschmarkt's lanes are dense on Saturdays with the flea market attached.
Do this. Take your coffee house on a weekday afternoon and the market on a weekday morning. In the evening, a wine tavern outside the centre needs no ticket.

Pack for Vienna's early starts
Why it works. In September Vienna has about 22 °C by day and rain on about 9 days. The tips above ask for early starts and a lot of walking.
Do this. Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.
