The autumn trough for foreign visitors
1 Sep – 18 Nov 2026September, October and the first half of November are the emptiest months for foreign visitors. The cruise ships stop calling, daylight is going quickly, and there is no school holiday. Prices are at their lowest and the Old Town is walkable at any hour.
How to avoid the worst of it today
- The Old Town lanes Before 10:00 Walk Raekoja plats, Katariina käik and both climbs to Toompea while the lanes are still empty.
- Kadriorg park Midday When the walled centre is at its fullest, the park a tram ride east of it has room to walk.

Where the crowds are
- The Viru Gate passage: Two stone towers with one passage between them, and it is the main way in.
- Katariina käik: A covered lane about two metres wide, walked in both directions at once.
- Pikk jalg and Lühike jalg: These two narrow climbs are the only sensible walking routes up to Toompea.
- The walk in from the Old City Harbour: A ferry or a cruise ship puts a block of people on the same street at the same minute.
Quiet places in Tallinn
- The Old Town before nine: Inside the walls the early hour is the emptiest part of a summer day.
- Telliskivi Loomelinnak: Old railway workshops west of the station, well outside the walls.
