How to avoid the worst of it today

Do Oia at breakfast, not at sunset. The village is genuinely lovely — at nine, with the marble lanes to yourself and the domes in morning light. Handing your one Oia visit to the sunset scrum is the island's classic mistake. When a place is famous for one hour, its second-best hour is the bargain of the day.
Walk the rim while the coaches drive it. The Fira–Oia path takes the island's best views away from every vehicle and most of its visitors. Start early for the heat; arrive in Oia as the morning crowd is only beginning.
Spend the afternoon inland or on the water. Wine villages, Akrotiri's shaded excavation, or a catamaran under the cliffs — three versions of the same trick: the caldera edge at peak is the only place the island truly jams.
Take sunset anywhere but the Oia castle. Imerovigli's Skaros rock, a Firostefani terrace, or the deck of a boat — the sun is identical, the elbow room is not.
