Old Town before 10:00, or through a far gate
Rhodes Old Town is where the most people are. On cruise days the gates nearest the port send thousands up the same cobbles, and the Street of the Knights fills from about 09:30. Two streets off that line, the lanes stay quiet all day, even at the peak.
Enter early or through a far gate, or take a walking tour of the old town in the morning. Come back in the evening. On a ship day, keep two streets away from the Street of the Knights.
Palace in its first hour, Lindos before 09:30
The Palace of the Grand Master has the old town's only real line, worst when the cruise groups arrive at the top of the Street of the Knights together. Lindos has one narrow lane system and an acropolis above it; coach groups and heat make 11:00 to 15:00 the hardest hours.
See the palace in its first hour or its last two, and walk the ramparts when they are open. Go to Lindos before 09:30 or after 16:00 and climb in the morning cool. Swim in the morning; walk Mandraki harbour at sunset.

Sleep near the old town's back lanes
The Rhodes crowd keeps to the Street of the Knights and the gates nearest the port, to Lindos at midday, and to the palace in the middle of a cruise morning. The back lanes two streets off the main line, the moat walk under the walls, and Mandraki with the mole stay quiet.
Stay near one of the quiet places, in the back lanes rather than on the cruise corridor. The city page names them and links to hotels there.
Pack for heat, cobbles and a climb
In September Rhodes has about 30 °C by day and rain on about 1 day. The tips above ask for early starts, old cobbles and the climb to the acropolis of Lindos in the morning cool.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours on cobbles, a hat and a water bottle, swimwear for the morning swim, and a charged phone or power bank for tickets and maps. You can leave the umbrella at home.
