Milan fills with the German and French school holidays
Why it works. Milan is busy when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French on 176. Public holidays in Germany count on 19 days, in the United States on 14, in Italy on 14, in the UK on 13 and in France on 11.

Book a Duomo ticket with the rooftop, at opening
Why it works. The Duomo has the longest lines in Milan: one for security, one for tickets and one for the rooftop lift, all in the same piazza. From mid-morning to mid-afternoon they add up. A booked ticket takes one of them away.
Do this. Book a ticket with the rooftop and go at opening, or take the last entries; at midday the stairs have a shorter line than the lift. Book The Last Supper as soon as your dates are firm: slots go weeks ahead in season.

Galleria before 10:00, the Castello in the afternoon
Why it works. Piazza del Duomo and the Galleria are fullest from 10:00 to 17:00. The courtyards of the Castello Sforzesco take any crowd, and Michelangelo's last Pieta stands in near quiet. The Navigli towpaths are quiet by day and full from early evening.
Do this. Walk the Galleria before 10:00 or in the evening. Spend the afternoon at the Castello and in Brera. The Scala museum lets you into the boxes above the hall most afternoons. Come to the Navigli at golden hour and take a canal-side table early.

Give a Busy day in Milan a plan
Why it works. On a Busy day in Milan, when you go matters more than where. Each Busy or Packed day page has three plans, with the hours and the tickets for each.
Do this. Take One day, the big sights when you have a single day. Take Start early, one ticket when you want one booking and no more. Take The quiet side when you want no lines at all.

Know the Packed weeks: Design Week and August
Why it works. August is Packed on every day, July on 26 days. Design Week, the Salone del Mobile, runs from 13 to 18 April with 6 Packed days; the Milano Marathon on 4 April is Packed too. Sant'Ambrogio's feast on 7 December, with its Christmas market and the opening night of La Scala, is one Busy day.
Do this. Avoid the Design Week dates and August. If December draws you, the Christmas market runs from 5 to 8 December; the other days of December are almost all Calm.

Aperitivo at golden hour on the Navigli
Why it works. The Navigli canals are Milan's busiest aperitivo mile at night; the crowd builds from early evening and is the point of the place. Brera's lanes have aperitivo at a slower pace.
Do this. Come to the Navigli at golden hour and take a canal-side table before the crowd arrives. Or end a Castello afternoon with an aperitivo in Brera.

Pack for Milan's early starts
Why it works. In September Milan has about 25 °C by day and rain on about 10 days. The tips above ask for early starts, a rooftop climb and a lot of walking.
Do this. Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a water bottle, a charged power bank for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.
