A marathon morning is the best time all year to be indoors in the centre: the NGV's galleries, the arcades, a long breakfast in a laneway. Stay off the streets between Batman Avenue and the stadium until the roads reopen, and the rest of the city is a quiet Sunday. advice

Is Melbourne worth visiting during the Festival?
Packed on all 2 event days; the nearest calm days are Lively. our forecast
Worth it if the Festival is why you're coming — expect Packed days; if crowds are your concern, it is the one time to avoid — the calm week of 26–28 Oct 2026 is the quieter plan. advice
Where are the crowds in Melbourne during the Festival?
The course is the crowd. Streets close from the start at Batman Avenue through the centre and out to the 'G, and the footpaths beside them fill with supporters. The stadium end is the busiest spot of the morning — every race finishes there.
Road closures: what closes and when the streets reopen
The start at Batman Avenue and the finish at the MCG are fixed, and the streets between them close for the racing. The organiser publishes the closure map and the times on its own site before the weekend — check your route against it, and cross the course on foot rather than trying to drive around it.
Times and routes change: melbournemarathon.com.au is the organiser's own page and the authority.
