Autumn: the second good walking season
20 Sep – 5 Nov 2026From late September to early November the heat drops back and walking works again all day. The monuments, the souks and the day trips all run at once, so expect the same dozen gates and alleys to be tight. Autumn school holidays in several European countries land inside this window, although the 2027 dates for them were not published when this was written.
How to avoid the worst of it today
- The Saadian Tombs At opening One narrow passage carries everyone in and out, so go through it before the coach groups arrive.
- Souk Semmarine Late morning When the covered spine locks up, the side lanes run the same way and stay walkable.
- Jemaa el-Fnaa Afternoon Cross the square while it is still open ground; the food stalls go up around five and it fills.
- The lanes three minutes off the souk Evening The busy old town is a dozen gates and a few alleys, and the streets either side of them are quiet.
Where the crowds are
- The passage into the Saadian Tombs: One corridor beside the Kasbah Mosque, and everybody who visits goes in and comes out through it.
- Souk Semmarine and the alleys north of the square: A covered lane a few metres wide, walked in both directions at once and shared with motorbikes and handcarts.
- Rue Yves Saint Laurent, outside the Jardin Majorelle: Tickets are timed, so the waiting happens on the pavement in full sun, next to the museum on the same street.
- Jemaa el-Fnaa once the food stalls are up: An open square with no ticket and no gate, which is why nobody can tell you in advance how full it will be.
Quiet places in Marrakesh
- The old town three minutes off the main lanes: The medina is not uniformly busy: about a dozen gates and a handful of alleys carry it, and the streets either side are empty.
- The middle of the day in July and August: With average highs around 37 degrees the open squares empty out and the ticketed monuments have no queue.
