Book the first entry to the Tower of London
The Tower of London has the longest lines in London. The entry lanes stack up on school-holiday mornings and summer middays, and inside, the line for the Crown Jewels is the slowest part. A booked first entry puts you ahead of both.
Book the first entry of the day and go to the Crown Jewels first. Then take the ravens and the walls at your own pace. If you only get an afternoon slot, join a Yeoman tour.
Abbey at opening, British Museum on Friday evening
Westminster Abbey has a line along its north front from mid-morning; Parliament Square is full from 10:00 to 18:00. The British Museum is free, so the line is the bag check, longest at weekend middays. On guard-change days the steps of the Victoria Memorial are full an hour ahead.
Do the Abbey at opening, or go to evensong, which is free. Visit the British Museum on a weekday at opening, after three or on a Friday evening. For the guard change, come 45 minutes early or watch from Wellington Barracks.

London's crowd keeps to Westminster Bridge and Parliament Square, the Tower's entry lanes, Borough Market on Saturdays, and Oxford Street and Covent Garden at weekends and in the evening. The royal parks from St James's to Kensington, the Inns of Court, Hampstead Heath and the Regent's Canal towpath stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The London page lists them and links to hotels near them.
Borough Market before 11:00, not on a Saturday
Borough Market's lanes move at a shuffle by noon on Saturdays and stay jammed from 11:00 to 16:00. The market is a morning or weekday visit. The walk along the South Bank is best in the evening, when the buildings are lit.

Pack for London's early starts and rain
