Come in April or May
Why it works. London is Calm on every day from January to March, but those are the cold, wet months: about 8 °C in January, with rain on about 11 days. April and May hold the recommended weeks: April is Calm on 28 of its 30 days, May on 24 of 31, with about 17 °C.
Do this. Pick your dates on London's year map. Take April or May; May has about 17 °C by day and rain on about 11 days. June is the summer exception: Lively on every day, with no Busy days.

Why it works. In London a Busy day often sits next to a Lively one. Thursday 10 September 2026 is Busy; Friday 11 September is Lively.
Do this. Tue 20 Oct is Packed in London; Sun 1 Nov is Busy. Move the visit by 12 days and the same city is quieter.

In London, take June or September, not July
Why it works. July and August are Busy or Packed on every day, and so are October and November; October has 25 Packed days. June is Lively on every day, with no Busy days. September has 2 Busy days. December has 13 Busy or Packed days out of 31.
Do this. If summer is the only time you can travel, book June or September. For autumn, wait for December rather than October or November. The month pages show each month week by week.

Tip 4
London fills with the German and French school holidays
Why it works. London is busy when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French on 176. Public holidays in Spain count on 29 days, in Germany on 19, in the United States on 14, in the UK on 13 and in France on 11.

Book the first entry to the Tower of London
Why it works. The Tower of London has the longest lines in London. The entry lanes stack up on school-holiday mornings and summer middays, and inside, the line for the Crown Jewels is the slowest part. A booked first entry puts you ahead of both.
Do this. Book the first entry of the day and go to the Crown Jewels first. Then take the ravens and the walls at your own pace. If you only get an afternoon slot, join a Yeoman tour.

Abbey at opening, British Museum on Friday evening
Why it works. Westminster Abbey has a line along its north front from mid-morning; Parliament Square is full from 10:00 to 18:00. The British Museum is free, so the line is the bag check, longest at weekend middays. On guard-change days the steps of the Victoria Memorial are full an hour ahead.
Do this. Do the Abbey at opening, or go to evensong, which is free. Visit the British Museum on a weekday at opening, after three or on a Friday evening. For the guard change, come 45 minutes early or watch from Wellington Barracks.

Why it works. On a Busy day in London, when you go matters more than where. Each Busy or Packed day page has three plans, with the hours and the tickets for each.
Do this. Take One day, the big sights when you have a single day. Take Start early, one ticket when you want one booking and no more. Take The quiet side when you want no lines at all.

Ship days, and the Packed dates to know
Why it works. Cruise ships call at London on 82 days of the year, most in December with 12. Some Packed dates come from events: New Year's Eve, the London Marathon on 24 and 25 April and the Notting Hill Carnival on 29 and 30 August. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from 13 November to 1 January.

Why it works. London's crowd keeps to Westminster Bridge and Parliament Square, the Tower's entry lanes, Borough Market on Saturdays, and Oxford Street and Covent Garden at weekends and in the evening. The royal parks from St James's to Kensington, the Inns of Court, Hampstead Heath and the Regent's Canal towpath stay quiet.
Do this. Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The London page lists them and links to hotels near them.

Borough Market before 11:00, not on a Saturday
Why it works. Borough Market's lanes move at a shuffle by noon on Saturdays and stay jammed from 11:00 to 16:00. The market is a morning or weekday visit. The walk along the South Bank is best in the evening, when the buildings are lit.
Do this. Come to Borough Market before 11:00, or on a weekday. Walk the South Bank from Borough to the Eye in the evening.

Pack for London's early starts and rain
Why it works. In September London has about 21 °C by day and rain on about 10 days. The tips above ask for early starts and a lot of walking.
Do this. Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged power bank for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.
