Buy your city walls ticket online

The city walls are 2 kilometres of rampart with no shade and a one-way flow. On cruise mornings there are queues at the Pile entrance and slow processions on the wall itself, in full sun. The best times are the first entries or the final two hours: at opening, or after 16:00.

Buy the walls ticket online before you travel. Go at opening or after 16:00. Start from the Ploce gate, against the flow, and carry water.

Stradun before 09:00, cable car in the late afternoon

The Pile gate and the Stradun are worst from 09:30 to 16:00 on ship days; on multi-ship days the street runs at festival density from mid-morning to late afternoon. The cable car up Mount Srd has its longest line for sunset. Banje beach fills below the view.

Walk the Stradun before 09:00 or after 19:00. In the crush hours, climb any side stair: two flights up, the lanes are empty. Ride the cable car up in the late afternoon and walk down after the light show.

Pick a plan for a Busy day in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is Busy or Packed on every day in July and August. On those days the order matters more than the list. Every Busy or Packed day page offers three plans, each with the tickets it needs and the hours to go.

Choose One day, the big sights when you have a single day. Choose Start early, one ticket when you want to pay for one ticket only. Choose The quiet side when you want no lines at all.

212 ship days; up to 7 at once

Check the ships page before you pick your dates. On a ship day, walk the walls at opening, take the morning boat to Lokrum, swim off the rocks, and come back for the evening Stradun.

Sleep on the quiet side of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik's crowd keeps to the Pile gate, the Stradun, the walls at midday and the cable car line at sunset. The upper lanes, two staircases above the Stradun, are quiet. So are Lokrum, 10 minutes out, and the Ploce ledges and Sveti Jakov, the swimming rocks to the east.

Stay a short way from the Pile gate, near one of the quiet places. The city page names them and links to hotels there.

The Stradun after dinner, drinks on the Buza rocks

On multi-ship days the Stradun runs at festival density from mid-morning to late afternoon. At dawn and after dinner it is yours. The Buza cliff bars pour drinks over bare rock at any crowd level, and the ledges are for swimming when the Banje beach mats fill.

Eat dinner first, then walk the Stradun in the evening. For a drink with a view, the Buza bars on the rocks work however full the town is.

Pack water for the walls, and an umbrella

In September Dubrovnik has about 26 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The walls have no shade, and the tips above ask for early starts and a lot of stairs.

Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone or power bank for tickets and maps, a water bottle for the walls, and a compact umbrella.
