Chicago: take April or September, not May to August

Book a morning sailing on the river
The river architecture tour loads from crowded docks all day, and on summer weekends the good hours sell out. A morning sailing has soft light and empty rails; the dusk boats trade calm for the glow of the lights.
Book a morning sailing before you travel, especially for a summer weekend. If you want the lights, book the dusk boat and expect company.
Bean at dawn, Art Institute at a weekday opening
Cloud Gate has a constant crowd taking reflection photos; it is worst at the golden hour. The Art Institute is calmest at a weekday opening. At the Skydeck the glass boxes have two lines, one for the lift and one for the photo, and sunset is the slot everyone wants.
Go to the Bean at dawn, or on a summer evening for the free concerts. Enter the Art Institute at a weekday opening through the modern wing's bridge entrance. Take the first hour at the Skydeck; 360 Chicago's Tilt has the shorter line.
Give a Busy day in Chicago a plan
Chicago is Busy or Packed on every day from May to August and in October. For each of those days the day page offers three plans, each with the tickets it needs and the hours to go.
Take One day, the big sights if you have one day; Start early, one ticket if you want to spend little; The quiet side if you want to skip the lines altogether.
Know the Packed months: July and August
July and August are Packed on every day of the forecast. October is Busy on every day, and Sunday 11 October 2026 is Packed for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. The Christkindlmarket runs from 20 November to 24 December, and every one of those days is Calm.
If you want the Christmas market, any day from 20 November to 24 December is Calm. Check the day page for the marathon weekend before you book October.
All events we know about in Chicago
Sleep near the Lakefront Trail's long miles
Chicago's crowd keeps to the Bean's plaza, worst at the golden hour, and to Navy Pier on summer weekends. The Lakefront Trail's long miles, the Cultural Center with the Loop's marble lobbies, and Promontory Point on the South Side stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The city page names them and links to hotels there.
Pack for a dawn start and the lake
In September Chicago has about 24 °C by day and rain on about 10 days. The tips above ask for a dawn start at the Bean and a lot of walking or cycling along the lake.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a power bank for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.
