Grant Park is the centre of it from Saturday morning. The professional field goes at 07:30 and the waves follow through 08:35, spectators are let into Grant Park from 09:30, and the post-race party on Butler Field runs until late afternoon. advice

Where are the crowds in Chicago during the Marathon?
Spectators line the whole route, and the crowd arrives days ahead of the runners: the Health & Fitness Expo runs Thursday to Saturday at McCormick Place, and a 5K fills Grant Park on the Saturday. On race day the pressure is the course itself — Grant Park at both ends of it, and every neighbourhood the loop passes through.
Road closures: what closes and when the streets reopen
The course runs from Grant Park out through the neighbourhoods and back, so closures follow the field rather than sitting still: streets shut ahead of the lead runners and reopen behind the last of them, working outward from Grant Park through the morning and back in by the afternoon.
The rest of the practical notes
The expo at McCormick Place and the Saturday 5K in Grant Park bring their own traffic on the two days before. The organiser publishes the closure list and the hour-by-hour schedule, and it is the only place those times are authoritative.
