How to avoid the worst of it today

Own the harbor before breakfast ends. The quay at nine is local Chania — fishermen, coffee, the lighthouse across still water. By noon it is the island's busiest promenade. Both are real; only one is worth planning around. Waterfronts with no gates have no queues to beat — only hours to choose. Choose the early one.
Send the middle of the day out of town or into Splantzia. A heavy day in the old town is best spent at its edges: the market before it winds down, then Splantzia's shaded squares, or the half-day drive to Falassarna's open sand.
Walk the mole as the light turns. The lighthouse walk is the town's finest free hour, and the crowd thins with every metre of the mole. Dinner afterward, one street back from the water, costs less and tastes better.
