Book a time slot for the Sagrada Familia
The Sagrada Familia has the longest lines in Barcelona. It sells timed tickets only, and in season the slots sell out days ahead. Do not count on buying a ticket at the gate. The gates are fullest mid-morning.
Book before you travel. Take a first slot of the morning, or a late afternoon slot, when the sun comes through the Passion windows.
Park Guell's first slot, the old city before 10:30
Park Guell's mosaic terrace is shoulder to shoulder at midday; take the first slot. The Gothic Quarter and El Born fill from late morning and are quiet before 10:30 and again in the evening. The Boqueria is best before 11:00 and is closed on Sundays.
For Casa Batllo and La Pedrera, take a first slot or one of the night openings they run in season. Go inside one and look at the other from the street. Beach in the morning; Bunkers del Carmel on a weekday at dusk.
Give a Busy day in Barcelona a plan

Expect a cruise ship on most days

Check the ship page for your dates before you book. On a ship day, do the old city before 10:30 and take the first slot at the sights with timed tickets.
Sleep near Montjuic
Barcelona's crowd keeps to La Rambla, the Gothic Quarter around the cathedral, the gates of the Sagrada Familia and the front of the Boqueria. Montjuic, Gracia, Sant Pau with the right side of the Eixample, and Horta with the upper parks stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The city page names them and links to hotels there.
The Boqueria on a weekday morning, lunch before one
The front stalls of the Boqueria are the busiest part of the market. The counters at the back serve lunch. The market is closed on Sundays. La Rambla outside is dense from late morning to late night. In the evening the Gothic Quarter and El Born fill for the vermut hour.
Go to the market early on a weekday morning and eat at a counter at the back before one o'clock. Cross La Rambla; do not stroll along it.
Pack for Barcelona's early starts
