King's Day 2027: how crowded Amsterdam gets
The city-wide holiday at the end of April when the whole inner canal belt becomes one party, on the water as much as on the streets. When the date falls on a Sunday the whole thing moves to the Saturday before.
It is the King's birthday: a national holiday, the country's biggest street party, and it starts the evening before with King's Night.
The city turns orange: the centre closes to traffic, decorated boats fill the canals, and for one day anyone may sell anything on the street.

The whole city centre closes to cars from half past seven in the morning.
The party starts the evening before, on King's Night, 26 April. Trains run longer and more often on both days — plan the journey out and the journey back in advance.

The metro is the way into the centre — from ten in the morning it runs every six minutes.
