Sunset steps an hour early, old town mornings
Zadar's one reliable crowd is at the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun: the whole town gathers there at dusk, in the hour around sunset. The old town on its peninsula is busy on cruise mornings but rarely jammed; the Kalelarga, the main marble lane, is busiest at ship-day midday.
Come an hour before sunset for a seat on the steps, or return at midnight, when the organ plays to almost no one. If you want a guide for the old town, book the walking tour for the morning.
Forum in the morning, Kornati by small boat
The Forum and the glass museum are best in the morning; the marble lanes can be walked at any hour. Kolovare fills on weekends, the rocky fringes of the peninsula never quite. The Kornati islands take as many visitors as the excursion boats bring; Plitvice and Krka carry their own summer crowds.

Pack for 25 °C, ladders and 8 rain days
In September Zadar has about 25 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for morning swims off ladders, a boat to the Kornati, an evening on stone steps and a walk along the coast path.
