Why it works. Zadar's peak lasts three months. August is Packed on 27 of 31 days, July on 18 of 31; June is Busy or Packed on all 30 days, with 6 Packed. May has 11 Busy or Packed days out of 31 and 20 Lively days; October has 11 out of 31 and 20 Lively days.

Tip 5
Sunset steps an hour early, old town mornings
Why it works. Zadar's one reliable crowd is at the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun: the whole town gathers there at dusk, in the hour around sunset. The old town on its peninsula is busy on cruise mornings but rarely jammed; the Kalelarga, the main marble lane, is busiest at ship-day midday.
Do this. Come an hour before sunset for a seat on the steps, or return at midnight, when the organ plays to almost no one. If you want a guide for the old town, book the walking tour for the morning.

Forum in the morning, Kornati by small boat
Why it works. The Forum and the glass museum are best in the morning; the marble lanes can be walked at any hour. Kolovare fills on weekends, the rocky fringes of the peninsula never quite. The Kornati islands take as many visitors as the excursion boats bring; Plitvice and Krka carry their own summer crowds.
Do this. See the Forum and the glass museum in the morning. Swim off the peninsula's ladders in the morning. For the Kornati, take a small boat and the first departure. For the waterfall parks in summer, be there at first entry.

Why it works. Zadar is a cruise port on 117 days of the year, in every month. October and July have 18 ship days each, August 17, May 15, June 14. From December to February one ship calls a month. On ship days the Kalelarga, the main marble lane, is busy at midday; the old town rarely jams.
Do this. Open the ship calendar for your dates. On a ship day, see the Forum in the morning, swim or go north to Nin at midday, and come back for the sunset on the Sea Organ steps.

Why it works. Zadar's crowd keeps to the Sea Organ steps at sunset, the Kalelarga at ship-day midday and Kolovare beach on weekends. The Kolovare coast path east, with its pines and ladders past the city beach, stays quiet. So do the edges of the Forum and Ugljan, the island across the channel.
Do this. Stay east of the city beach, near the Kolovare coast path, or take the ferry to Ugljan across the channel. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.

Pack for 25 °C, ladders and 8 rain days
Why it works. In September Zadar has about 25 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for morning swims off ladders, a boat to the Kornati, an evening on stone steps and a walk along the coast path.
Do this. Bring shoes for stone lanes and a coast path, a water bottle, a charged power bank for tickets and boat times, and a compact umbrella.
