Why it works. Dutch school holidays are a driver on 132 days of the year, the only school holidays on the list. Public holidays in the United States and on Curacao count on 14 days each, in the Netherlands on 11. The rest is the ships: 207 call days a year.

See the Handelskade before 10:00
Why it works. The painted waterfront and the swinging pontoon bridge are every visitor's first hour in Willemstad. On ship days the quay is slow going from 10:00 to 15:00. The morning light shows the gables best, and the bridge openings are free to watch.
Do this. Come before 10:00. When the Queen Emma bridge swings open, the free ferry runs across the harbour; ride it once on purpose. A guided walk of the old town is on the tickets page.

Coves before 10:30, reefs early, Pietermaai at night
Why it works. The west coast coves, from Cas Abao to Playa Kenepa, are small. The ledge at Kenepa Grandi fills by late morning on cruise days and weekends. The reef starts at the shoreline; the shore entries and the Tugboat wreck are for the morning. Pietermaai is liveliest at its dinner hour.
Do this. Be at the named coves in the first hours, or take the fishermen's beaches between them. Snorkel in the morning; the shallow Tugboat wreck is the classic. Walk Otrobanda's murals by day and Pietermaai's in the evening.

Sleep away from the quay
Why it works. Willemstad's crowd keeps to the Handelskade at cruise midday and to the ledge at Kenepa Grandi in the late morning. The fishermen's beaches between the named coves, the evening blocks of Pietermaai, the coves of Shete Boka on the north coast and the lagoon of the Spanish Water, southeast of town, stay quiet.

Why it works. Pietermaai, the restored quarter with the murals, is liveliest at its dinner hour, with music and dinner under the restored facades. It is strolled, never jammed.
Do this. Eat in Pietermaai in the evening. By day, walk the alleys of Otrobanda with ordinary care, as you would in any town.

Pack for 32 °C and 10 rain days
Why it works. In September Willemstad has about 32 °C by day and rain on about 10 days. The tips above ask for early mornings on the quay, a drive to the coves and a morning in the water.
