- Venice's calmest months are December, November and March: no Busy or Packed days. In summer, June has 15 Busy or Packed days out of 30, July 31.
- Packed days fall on weekends 60 times and on weekdays 20 times. The busy weeks follow the school holidays of Germany and France; ships call on 137 days.
- St Mark's Basilica has the longest waits; booking ahead has been required since July 2025. Book a slot before 09:30. The Doge's Palace sells out 2 to 3 days ahead in peak months.
- The Carnival runs from 23 January to 9 February with 18 Packed days. The Film Festival, 6 to 12 September, has 7.
- Cannaregio, Castello and Dorsoduro stay quiet even on the worst days, three bridges off the corridor from the station to San Marco.

December is Calm on every day; November and March have no Busy or Packed days. January and February are Calm too, except during the Carnival: 18 Packed days from 23 January to 9 February. In summer, June has 15 Busy or Packed days out of 30, the fewest.

In Venice, take June or October, not July
July is Busy or Packed on every day, August on 26 days out of 31. June has 15 Busy or Packed days out of 30, October 16 out of 31. September has 12 Packed days, 7 of them during the Film Festival from 6 to 12 September.
If summer is the only time you can travel, book June. For autumn, book October, or November, which has no Busy or Packed days at all. The month pages show each month week by week.
Venice fills with the German and French school holidays
Venice is busy when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French on 176. Public holidays in Germany count on 19 days, in the United States on 14, in Italy on 14, in the UK on 13 and in France on 11.

Book a time slot for St Mark's Basilica
St Mark's Square and the Basilica have the longest waits in Venice. Booking ahead has been required since July 2025. By late morning the security line alone can take half an hour.
Book a slot before 09:30, or take the last entries. Book the Doge's Palace as well: in the peak months the slots go 2 to 3 days out. Take its first slot or come after 16:00.
Rialto before 09:00, the islands before 10:00
The corridor from the station through Strada Nova and Rialto to San Marco fills from about 09:30 and empties after five in the afternoon. The Rialto Bridge is full all day. The boat to Murano and Burano is the crush, not the islands. Line 1 is full at the famous stops all day.
Cross the Rialto before 09:00 and come back for the view after 18:00. Take the boat to the islands before 10:00 or after 15:00, or join a tour with its own boat. Ride Line 1 early or after dinner, and board at a quieter stop.
Give a Busy day in Venice a plan
On a Busy day in Venice, when you go matters more than where. Each Busy or Packed day page has three plans, with the hours and the tickets for each.
Take One day, the big sights when you have a single day. Take Start early, one ticket when you want one booking and no more. Take The quiet side when you want no lines at all.
Ship days, weekends and the Packed weeks
Cruise ships call at Venice on 137 days of the year; May and August have 18 ship days, February 1. Weekends matter more: Packed days fall on weekends 60 times and on weekdays 20 times. The Carnival, 23 January to 9 February, has 18 Packed days; the Film Festival, 6 to 12 September, 7.
Come on weekdays. Check the ship page and the event days: the Regata Storica on 6 September and the Festa del Redentore on 17 and 18 July are Packed too.
Sleep near Cannaregio
Nearly all of Venice's crowd is on one line: from the station through Strada Nova and Rialto to San Marco, and on Line 1 at those stops. Cannaregio, with the Ghetto and the Fondamenta della Misericordia, and Castello and Dorsoduro, with Via Garibaldi, the Giardini and everything beyond the Accademia, stay quiet all day.
Stay a few bridges away from the corridor, in one of the quiet quarters. The Venice page lists them and links to hotels there.
Eat in Cannaregio, Castello or Dorsoduro
The Rialto Market is a morning visit, Tuesday to Saturday, and the cicchetti bars around it serve every day. The quiet quarters are where to eat: three bridges off the corridor, Venice is quiet even on its worst days.
See the market in the morning and stop at a cicchetti bar. For lunch and dinner, walk three bridges away from the corridor into Cannaregio, Castello or Dorsoduro.
Pack for Venice's early starts and bridges
In September Venice has about 24 °C by day and rain on about 9 days. The tips above ask for early starts, many bridges and a lot of walking.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a water bottle, a charged power bank for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.
