Book St John's Co-Cathedral for opening time
St John's Co-Cathedral has the one steady queue in Valletta, and on cruise mornings it is twice as long. Behind the plain facade are the golden interior and the Caravaggios. It is closed on Sundays, and there is a dress code.
Book online in season, for opening time or for after two in the afternoon. See the Beheading when the room is at its emptiest. Check the dress code before you go.
Republic Street before 10:00, Mdina in the evening
Republic Street carries the whole city's flow and is worst from 10:00 to 16:00; cruise days double it. The Upper Barrakka fills for the noon gun from 11:45 to 12:15. In Mdina the coach groups come from mid-morning to mid-afternoon; in the evening it goes quiet again.
Walk Republic Street before 10:00 or in the evening; otherwise use Merchants and the side grid. See the harbour from the Upper Barrakka early or at six in the evening, not at noon. Go to Mdina in the late afternoon and stay into the evening.

Check the ship days: 27 in October alone
Valletta is a cruise port on most days. Ships call on 231 days in the coming year, in every month. October has 27 call days, May 26, July and August 24 each. February has 8 and January 9. On cruise mornings the co-cathedral queue doubles and Republic Street carries twice its flow.
Before you book, open the ships page for your dates. On a ship day, do the co-cathedral at opening, cross the harbour to the Three Cities in the afternoon, and come back by ferry at dusk.
Sleep near the side grid
Valletta's crowd keeps to Republic Street, the Upper Barrakka at noon and Mdina's gate at coach hours. The side grid, one block off Republic Street, the Three Cities with Birgu's lanes, and the Lower Barrakka with the war memorials stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The side grid has balconies and silence. The Three Cities lie across the Grand Harbour, a boat ride of 2 minutes. The city page links to hotels there.
Pack for sun and early starts
In September Valletta has about 28 °C by day and rain on about 5 days. The tips above ask for early mornings on Republic Street, a boat across the harbour and a lot of walking.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone for tickets and maps, and a water bottle. Remember the dress code for the co-cathedral. An umbrella can stay at home.
