Take February or April instead of March
Why it works. March is Packed on 20 of its 31 days, because Las Fallas runs from 1 to 19 March. The months on either side are far quieter: February has 2 Busy or Packed days out of 28, April 8 out of 30. The other peak is August, Busy or Packed on all 31 days.
Do this. If you are not coming for Las Fallas, book February or April. For the sea without August, take June: 18 Busy or Packed days out of 30. The month pages show each month week by week.

Tip 4
German and French school holidays fill Valencia
Why it works. Valencia fills when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French on 176. Public holidays in Spain count on 29 days, in Germany on 19, in Italy on 14, in the UK on 13 and in France on 11.

Tip 5
Book the Oceanografic for opening or after three
Why it works. The Oceanografic and the science museum take school groups and families from mid-morning to early afternoon on weekdays in term. The buildings of the City of Arts and Sciences around them are free to walk through and never have a line.
Do this. Book Oceanografic entry for the first hour of the day, or go after three. Come back to the complex at dusk, when the pools reflect the lights. That part costs nothing.

Market in the morning, towers before sunset
Why it works. The aisles of the Central Market are the tightest place in the old town, and only in the morning. On Sunday the market is closed. The Lonja is quiet before noon. The Miguelete tower has a line you can judge from the square. Malvarrosa beach fills on summer weekends.
Do this. Do the market first and hungry, the Lonja before noon, and the Miguelete tower when the line looks short. Take the beach on a weekday morning. Climb a tower in El Carmen before sunset, then stay for the lanes.

Do this. Open the ship calendar for your dates. On a ship day, do the Central Market early, spend the middle of the day in the Turia gardens or at the Albufera lagoon, and keep the old town for the evening.

Sleep near the Turia gardens
Why it works. Valencia's crowd keeps to the aisles of the Central Market in the morning, the Oceanografic from mid-morning, the bar lanes of El Carmen at night and Malvarrosa beach on summer weekends. The Turia gardens, the Cabanyal behind the beach and the Albufera lagoon stay quiet.
Do this. Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The Valencia page names them and links to hotels there.

Eat before the market fills, rice out of town
Why it works. The Central Market is a food market, and its aisles are dense every morning it opens. On Sunday it is closed, and half the old town pattern closes with it. A beachfront table for paella on Sunday needs booking ahead. The Albufera lagoon south of the city is rice country.
Do this. Shop or eat at the Central Market first thing, and not on a Sunday. Book a beachfront table ahead if you want paella for Sunday lunch. For rice at the source, go out to the Albufera lagoon.

Pack for 28 °C and long park walks
Why it works. In September Valencia has about 28 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for an early start at the market, a morning on the beach and the whole length of the Turia gardens.
Do this. Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a water bottle, swimwear, a charged power bank for tickets, and a compact umbrella.
