- Sydney's calmest months are May and September: May is Calm on 27 days with 1 Busy day, September on 24 days with none. April has 25 Calm days. July and August have 1 Busy or Packed day each.
- December is Packed on all 31 days. November, February and March are Busy or Packed on every day. January in between is the exception: 19 Calm days.
- Circular Quay's concourse is worst at midday. The Opera House forecourt has a photo crowd all day; walk the podium at sunrise and book a tour or a performance.

Sun 4 Oct is Packed in Sydney; Sat 3 Oct is Lively. Move the visit by a day and the same city is quieter.
Take January or April, not December to March
December is Packed on all 31 days. November is Busy or Packed on all 30, February on all 28, March on all 31. January has 10 such days out of 31 and 19 Calm days. April has 5 out of 30, October 6 out of 31.

Book the Opera House tour, or a performance
The Opera House forecourt has a photo crowd all day. Inside, the building runs on tour slots and performance tickets; both can be booked and both are best early.
Walk the podium at sunrise for empty steps. Then book the tour or, better, any performance: the building is made to be used.
Bridge climb weeks ahead, coastal walk on a weekday
The Bridge climb sells its dawn and twilight slots weeks out; the deck walk and the pylon lookout are free. The Bondi to Coogee cliff path runs at full flow on fine weekend middays. Echo Point's rail in the Blue Mountains is full of coach groups at midday.
Book the climb long ahead; walk the deck's east side any morning for the Opera House view. Do the coastal walk on a weekday morning. In the mountains, take an early train, see Echo Point first, then walk 10 minutes down any trail.
Give a Busy day in Sydney a plan
Sydney has 2 Busy or Packed days in the next 30, and then every day from November to the end of December. Every Busy or Packed day page offers three plans, each with the tickets it needs and the hours to go.
Take One day, the big sights if you have a single day; Start early, one ticket if you want to spend little; The quiet side if you want the garden's lawns and the lesser coves instead of Circular Quay.
Check the ship days: 64 in the year
Sydney is a port. Cruise ships call on 64 days of the year, up to 3 ships on a day in March. February has 15 ship days, December and January 10 each, March 9. No ship calls in May or September.
From October to April, check the day page for a ship. On a ship day, take the Opera House podium at sunrise and give the middle of the day to the Botanic Garden or a ferry to one of the lesser coves.
Sleep by one of the harbour's lesser coves
Sydney's crowd keeps to Circular Quay's concourse, worst at midday, the coastal walk on fine weekend middays and Echo Point at midday. The Botanic Garden's lawns and the harbour's lesser coves, Balmoral, Watsons and Nielsen Park, reachable by ferry, stay quiet.
Stay near one of the lesser coves and come into the centre by ferry, outside commuter peaks. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.
Rocks market on Saturday, its lanes on a weekday
The Rocks' heritage lanes carry the weekend-market crowds on Saturdays. The Botanic Garden next to it takes every tour bus onto its harbour lawns with room to spare.
Go to the market on a Saturday if you want it, knowing the lanes will be full; walk the lanes on a weekday. End at Mrs Macquarie's Chair at sunset, or on the Manly ferry's front deck westbound at sunset, which costs nothing extra.
Pack for walks, ferries and early starts
In September Sydney has about 21 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. December reaches about 25 °C, July about 17 °C. The tips above ask for sunrise walks, cliff paths and an early train.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone or power bank for tickets and maps, a compact umbrella and a layer for the ferry deck.

What is the quietest month to visit Sydney?

Is Sydney crowded in December?
