Come in April, or in March
Why it works. Split has no Busy or Packed days from December to April. The recommended weeks fall in March and April: April is about 17 °C by day, March about 15 °C with rain on 7 days. December and January are quieter, but December is about 13 °C with rain on 15 days.

Do this. Tue 20 Oct is Busy in Split; Wed 21 Oct is Lively. Move the visit by a day and the same city is quieter.

Tip 3
Choose May or October over July and August
Why it works. July and August are Split's peak: all 31 days of each are Busy or Packed, with 24 Packed days in July and 22 in August. June has 20 Busy or Packed days out of 30. May has 14 out of 31 and October 11 out of 31; October has 18 Lively days, May 17.
Do this. If you want the sea in season without a Packed month, book May or October. Both are ship months, with 21 and 29 ship days, so use the day pages to find the days between the ships. Book boats to the islands a day ahead.

Watch the German, Dutch and Czech school holidays
Why it works. Split fills when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, Dutch on 132, Czech on 114 and Polish on 42. Public holidays in Germany, Poland, Croatia and Czechia add 13 to 19 days each.

Palace before 09:00, or book a walking tour
Why it works. Diocletian's Palace is the old town of Split. The Peristyle square is fullest when cruise groups and klapa singers meet. On ship days the Peristyle and the palace lanes are at their worst from 10:00 to 16:00. The cellars and the cathedral's tower take tickets and have modest lines by mid-morning.
Do this. Walk the palace at dawn, before 09:00, or in the evening. If you want a guide, book the palace walking tour with an early start. Buy the cellar and tower tickets before mid-morning.

Bell tower at opening, Riva in the evening
Why it works. The narrow stairs of St Domnius's bell tower fill in pulses, and the small temple beside it takes visitors two at a time. The Riva is full every evening, at the korzo hour. Bacvice fills on summer weekends; the rockier coves to the east have more room.
Do this. Climb the bell tower at opening, before the haze and the queue build. Swim at Bacvice in the morning, before 10:00, or walk the coast path east past Firule until the towels thin. Take the Riva in the evening and Marjan's viewpoint for sunset.

Do this. Open the ship calendar for your dates. On a ship day, be in the palace before 10:00 or after 16:00, and spend midday on Marjan or the coast path. On the heaviest days the islands take Split's crowd; a mainland beach can be better.

Why it works. Split's crowd keeps to the Peristyle and the palace lanes on ship days, the ferry port at boat times and Bacvice on summer weekends. Varos, the old fishermen's quarter climbing off the Riva, is all stone and quiet. Marjan's pine paths and the coast path east past Firule stay quiet.

Pack for stairs, 27 °C and 8 rain days
Why it works. In September Split has about 27 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for a dawn walk in the palace, the tower stairs, Marjan's pine stairs and morning swims.
