See Oia in the morning, the sunset from elsewhere
Oia's castle viewpoint and the lanes that lead to it lock solid in the two hours before sunset, every night in season. It is worse when cruise ships are in.
See Oia before 10:00. Take the sunset from Imerovigli, Firostefani or a boat: the same sun with a fraction of the crowd. A sunset catamaran cruise can be booked ahead.
Caldera by 08:30, Akrotiri at opening or after 14:00
The caldera path from Fira to Oia takes three hours; only the first stretch out of Fira is crowded, and heat is the real limit. Akrotiri is busiest when cruise excursions arrive mid-morning; it is shaded, and the coaches thin after lunch. In Fira, the cable car line is tightest on ship days.
Start the caldera path by 08:30 and walk north. Do Akrotiri at opening or after 14:00. Walk the caldera edge in Fira early in the morning or after dark; the view is free at both hours.

Sleep near the caldera path between the towns
Santorini's crowd keeps to Oia at sunset, Fira on ship days and Red Beach at midday. The caldera path between the towns, the wine villages inland, the long black-sand coast at Perissa and Perivolos, and Imerovigli with Skaros rock stay quiet.
Stay near one of the quiet places: Imerovigli, a village north of Fira; the wine villages Pyrgos and Megalochori; or the coast at Perissa and Perivolos. The island page links to hotels there.
Book a wine tasting for the afternoon
Inland, Pyrgos and Megalochori have basket-trained vines and blue-domed villages without the caldera crowd. Tastings book out in season but never feel crowded.
Book a tasting ahead for the afternoon of a heavy day, while the caldera rim carries the crowd. A small-group wine tour can be booked.
Pack for heat, not rain
In September Santorini has about 26 °C by day and rain on about 2 days. Heat is the real limit on the caldera path, and the tips above ask for early starts.
Bring shoes you can walk in for three hours, a power bank for tickets and maps, and water for the path. An umbrella can stay at home.
