Book El Morro and go at opening
El Morro is the big harbour fortress. On cruise days the crowd spreads across its field and ramparts; the lawn's kite flyers outnumber any queue, but the vaults tighten at midday.
Book the fortress entry and be there at opening for empty ramparts and the cool trade wind. The combined ticket covers Castillo San Cristobal, whose tunnels are cooler at noon. Come back to the kite field at sunset; that half is free.
Cobbles before 10:00, forest mornings, bays on dark nights
Old San Juan's blue cobbles fill with the piers: the Cristo and Fortaleza blocks from 10:00 to 16:00 on ship days. El Yunque's popular trails run on timed reservations in peak periods. The bioluminescent bays load kayaks by the new-moon calendar; a full moon dims the show.
Walk the cobbles before 10:00 or in the evening, when the plazas go back to the domino players. Book El Yunque for a morning and the bay for the darkest night the calendar offers. Swim in the morning, before the trade wind chops the water.
