Watch the public holidays and the convention calendar
No school holidays drive San Diego's forecast. Its drivers are public holidays: Canada on 19 days of the year and the United States on 14. The zoo's gates have their worst lines at mid-morning in the school holidays. The Gaslamp fills on convention and game nights; Comic-Con week is its own city.

Book timed tickets for the zoo and the Midway
The zoo's gates draw school-holiday lines, which timed tickets take away. At opening the animals are active; the park's Prado is for strolling afterwards. The USS Midway also runs on timed entry; an opening slot gets you onto the carrier before the school groups.
Book the zoo admission for opening and walk the Prado after. Book the Midway for opening too; the harbor cruises fill the afternoon gently.
La Jolla Cove before 10:30, Coronado at sunset
La Jolla's cove railings are packed for the sea lions from 11:00 to 16:00. In the morning the water is clear for snorkelling and parking is easy; the coast walk south to the Children's Pool thins with every step. Coronado's sand is wide enough for a summer weekend.
Be at La Jolla Cove before 10:30, then walk south. Take the ferry to Coronado, ride the island loop by bike and stay for sunset against the Del's turrets. Old Town works at weekday lunch.
San Diego: pick a plan for a Busy day

San Diego's crowd keeps to the zoo's gates in the school holidays, La Jolla's cove railings at midday and the Gaslamp on convention nights. Coronado's long sand, the Torrey Pines trails above an uncrowded beach, and Sunset Cliffs in the evening stay quiet.

Pack for sun, early gates and the coast walk
In September San Diego has about 25 °C by day and rain on about 2 days. The tips above ask for opening slots, a bike loop on Coronado and a coast walk at La Jolla.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone or power bank for timed tickets and maps, and a water bottle. You can leave the umbrella at home.
