Come between November and May; February is Calm
Why it works. San Diego has no Busy days in February: Calm on all 28, with no ships. January has 2 Busy days, November and March 3, April 7. There is no calm summer month: June is Busy on all 30 days, July Packed on all 31, August Busy on all 31.
Do this. Pick your dates from San Diego's year map. The four weeks of February 2027 are among the quietest of the year. For warm days without the summer crowd, September is about 25 °C.

Why it works. In San Diego a Packed day can sit right next to a Lively one. Monday 14 September 2026 is Packed. Tuesday 15 September is Lively.
Do this. Tue 20 Oct is Packed in San Diego; Wed 21 Oct is Lively. Move the visit by a day and the same city is quieter.

Take May or September instead of June to August
Why it works. July is Packed on all 31 days, and June and August are Busy on every day. May has 5 Busy or Packed days out of 31. October has 9, 8 of them Packed.
Do this. If you want warm weather, book May or September rather than the summer months; May has about 20 °C by day, September about 25 °C. The month pages show each month week by week.

Tip 4
Watch the public holidays and the convention calendar
Why it works. No school holidays drive San Diego's forecast. Its drivers are public holidays: Canada on 19 days of the year and the United States on 14. The zoo's gates have their worst lines at mid-morning in the school holidays. The Gaslamp fills on convention and game nights; Comic-Con week is its own city.

Tip 5
Book timed tickets for the zoo and the Midway
Why it works. The zoo's gates draw school-holiday lines, which timed tickets take away. At opening the animals are active; the park's Prado is for strolling afterwards. The USS Midway also runs on timed entry; an opening slot gets you onto the carrier before the school groups.
Do this. Book the zoo admission for opening and walk the Prado after. Book the Midway for opening too; the harbor cruises fill the afternoon gently.

La Jolla Cove before 10:30, Coronado at sunset
Why it works. La Jolla's cove railings are packed for the sea lions from 11:00 to 16:00. In the morning the water is clear for snorkelling and parking is easy; the coast walk south to the Children's Pool thins with every step. Coronado's sand is wide enough for a summer weekend.
Do this. Be at La Jolla Cove before 10:30, then walk south. Take the ferry to Coronado, ride the island loop by bike and stay for sunset against the Del's turrets. Old Town works at weekday lunch.

San Diego: pick a plan for a Busy day
Why it works. San Diego is Busy or Packed on every day from June to August. On those days the order matters more than the list. Every Busy or Packed day page offers three plans, each with the tickets it needs and the hours to go.
Do this. Choose One day, the big sights when you have a single day. Choose Start early, one ticket when you want to pay for one ticket only. Choose The quiet side when you want no lines at all.

Ships call on 48 days, none in summer
Why it works. San Diego has few ship days: 48 in the coming 365. There are no ship days in February, June or July. January has 9, October and April 8. On the biggest days 2 ships call at once.
Do this. Check the ships page before you pick your dates. On a ship day, take the Midway and the harbor early, and keep the afternoon for Coronado or Torrey Pines.

Sleep near Coronado's sand or out by Sunset Cliffs
Why it works. San Diego's crowd keeps to the zoo's gates in the school holidays, La Jolla's cove railings at midday and the Gaslamp on convention nights. Coronado's long sand, the Torrey Pines trails above an uncrowded beach, and Sunset Cliffs in the evening stay quiet.

Pack for sun, early gates and the coast walk
Why it works. In September San Diego has about 25 °C by day and rain on about 2 days. The tips above ask for opening slots, a bike loop on Coronado and a coast walk at La Jolla.
Do this. Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone or power bank for timed tickets and maps, and a water bottle. You can leave the umbrella at home.
