Ride the funicular at opening, or walk up
The funicular base at the Hohensalzburg fortress is the one real line in Salzburg, from late morning on. The walk up takes about 20 minutes and has no line. The ramparts are at their best in the last light of the day.
Book the fortress ticket with funicular and ride up at opening, or walk up at any hour. If you want the view at sunset, plan the day backwards from it.
Getreidegasse before 10:00, Mirabell before the buses
The Getreidegasse and the composer's birthplace take the whole town's foot traffic; the lane is worst from 11:00 to 17:00, when the coaches and day trips are in. The Mirabell Gardens have tour groups at the Pegasus fountain from the time the buses arrive. The DomQuartier is roomy at midday.
Walk the Getreidegasse before 10:00 or in the evening; the riverside and the courtyards through the passages stay quiet at all hours. See the Mirabell Gardens before 10:00. Keep the DomQuartier and the cathedral for midday. Go to Hellbrunn early on hot days.

Sleep on the right bank, near the Steingasse
Salzburg's crowd keeps to the Getreidegasse, the funicular base and the Mirabell fountain at tour-bus hours. The Monchsberg paths, clifftop woods directly above the old town, the Steingasse and the river walks on the right bank, and St Peter's cemetery at the foot of the cliff stay quiet.

Pack for rain on 11 days and a climb
In September Salzburg has about 20 °C by day and rain on about 11 days. The tips above ask for early starts, a 20-minute walk up to the fortress and evenings on foot.
