- Prague Castle has the longest lines from mid-morning; go at opening or after 16:00. The Charles Bridge is full from mid-morning to midnight; walk it at dawn.

Come in April, or in September
January, February and March are Calm on almost every day, but they are cold: about 4 °C in January, with rain on about 12 days. April is quiet too and milder: Calm on 27 of its 30 days, about 14 °C. September has 1 Busy day and about 21 °C.

In Prague a Busy day often sits next to a Lively one. Monday 28 September 2026 is Busy, a Czech public holiday; Tuesday 29 September is Lively.
Mon 28 Sep is Busy in Prague; Sun 27 Sep is Lively. Move the visit by a day and the same city is quieter.
In Prague, take June or September, not July
July and August are Busy or Packed on every day, and so are October and December; August is Packed throughout. June is Lively on every day. September has 1 Busy day. November has none; May has 7 Busy or Packed days out of 31.
If summer is the only time you can travel, book June or September. For autumn, take November rather than October. The month pages show each month week by week.
Watch the German, Czech and Polish school holidays
Prague is busy when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, Czech on 114 and Polish on 42. Public holidays count on fewer days: Germany 19, the United States 14, Poland 14, Czechia 13, the UK 13.

Book the castle for opening, or go after 16:00
Prague Castle has the longest lines in Prague: the security gates, the courtyards and the timed entry to St Vitus all slow down from mid-morning. The Golden Lane empties late in the day.
Be through security at opening and go straight to the cathedral, or come after 16:00. Walk down through the gardens instead of the crowded stairs. In Josefov, take the first hour and the old cemetery first; it is closed on Saturdays.
Charles Bridge at dawn, the clock from the back
The Charles Bridge carries an unbroken procession from mid-morning to midnight; the Royal Route from the bridge to the Old Town Square is dense from 10:00 to midnight. The astronomical clock packs its corner on the hour.
Walk the Charles Bridge at sunrise or after 23:00. Watch one strike of the clock from the back of the crowd, then climb the tower instead. For the rest of the day, take Mala Strana and Petrin hill, one street away from the crowd.
Give a Busy day in Prague a plan
On a Busy day in Prague, when you go matters more than where. Each Busy or Packed day page has three plans, with the hours and the tickets for each.

Know the Packed weeks: August, December, the Signal Festival
August is Packed on every day, July on 23 days. December is Busy or Packed throughout; the Christmas markets run from 28 November to 6 January. The Signal Festival, 15 to 18 October, has 4 Packed days, and the marathons on 3 April and 2 May are Packed too.
Avoid August and the Signal Festival dates. For the Christmas markets with fewer people, come in the last days of November or the first days of January: the markets' 9 Calm days are there, and every day of December is Busy or Packed.

Sleep near Kampa
Prague's crowd keeps to the Royal Route from the Charles Bridge to the Old Town Square, the castle's security gates and the clock corner. Kampa and the Wallenstein garden, Vysehrad, Vinohrady and Zizkov, and Letna's beer garden plateau stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The Prague page lists them and links to hotels near them.
Drink at Letna or in Vinohrady and Zizkov
Letna's plateau has a beer garden with poplars, river views and benches above the bridges. Vinohrady and Zizkov have the cafe squares and pub corners where the people of Prague go.
Take your beer at Letna at sunset. Eat and drink in Vinohrady or Zizkov instead of on the Royal Route.
Pack for Prague's early starts and hills
In September Prague has about 21 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for a sunrise, a castle hill and a lot of walking.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged power bank for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.

What is the quietest month to visit Prague?

Is Prague crowded in December?

Do I need to book Prague Castle in advance?
