In Porto, take June or September, not July

Book the first slot at Livraria Lello
Livraria Lello has the longest line in Porto. The bookshop sells timed entry and still has a queue around the block for most of the day. The first slot of the morning is the one to book.
Book the first slot of the morning before you travel, or skip the bookshop. The Carmo churches, a few steps away, are free and calmer.
Bridge before 10:00, Clerigos early or at dusk
The Ribeira arcades are fullest in the afternoons and evenings. The top deck of the Dom Luis I bridge is a slow shuffle at sunset. The Clerigos tower lets people up its narrow spiral in groups. The six-bridges cruises load all day from both banks; the gangways are the crowded part, not the river.
Cross the top deck before 10:00 for the empty view. Watch the sunset from the Gaia side or the Jardim do Morro, facing the bridge rather than standing on it. Climb the Clerigos tower early or at dusk. Take a morning sailing on the Douro.

Before you book, open the ships page for your dates. On a ship day, cross the bridge before 10:00, book Lello's first slot, and keep the afternoon for Foz do Douro or the cathedral terrace.
Sleep near the cathedral terrace
Porto's crowd keeps to the Ribeira arcades, the top deck of the bridge at sunset and Lello's block. The cathedral terrace with Barredo's stairs, Foz do Douro, the Crystal Palace gardens and Gaia's smaller lodges stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. Foz do Douro, at the river mouth, is one old tram ride away. The Crystal Palace gardens sit above the rooftops with river views. The city page links to hotels there.
Book the big port houses, walk into small ones
In Gaia the port tastings run on tour schedules, not lines. In season the big houses fill their English-language slots by midday; the small houses almost never fill. The view back across the river is the same from both.
Book a tasting at a famous house ahead, or walk into a small lodge on the spot. Gaia's smaller lodges have no coach groups. The Festa de Sao Joao, on 23 and 24 June, is the night of bonfires and sardines; both days are Packed.
Pack for hills, an early bridge and some rain
In September Porto has about 24 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for an early crossing, a tower climb and a lot of walking up and down.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.
