Book the tower climb before you arrive
The climb up the Leaning Tower is timed and capped, and it sells ahead in season. The lawn in front is full of people taking the photo all day; coaches arrive from 10:30 to 16:00. The stairs have short pulses when the timed groups swap.
Book the climb slot ahead: the first slot or an evening one, for the light and the space. The photo can be taken at any hour; the climb is the appointment.
Duomo pass early, Baptistery on the half-hour
The cathedral is free but needs a timed pass, and it fills. The Baptistery's echo demonstration draws a cluster every half-hour. The Camposanto, the frescoed cloister on the same square, is quiet at any hour; most visitors never go in.
Collect the free Duomo pass when you buy any other ticket. Go early or in the late afternoon. Time the Baptistery to hear the echo sung. When the lawn is at its fullest, step into the Camposanto.

Lunch in Borgo Stretto, not by the tower
Most visitors never leave the Field of Miracles. The arcaded lanes of Borgo Stretto, the riverfront and Keith Haring's wall belong to students and residents.
Have lunch in Borgo Stretto or on Piazza delle Vettovaglie. It is better and calmer than anything near the tower, and lunch is a good hour to be away from the lawn.
Pack for an early slot and some rain
