Take June or October instead of August
Why it works. August has 29 Busy or Packed days out of 31, 16 of them Packed. July has 26. June has 24 out of 30 and October has 15 out of 31. May has 18.

Why it works. Palma is busy when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French on 176 and Dutch on 132. Spanish public holidays count for 29 days, German for 19, Swedish for 16, UK for 13 and French for 11.

Book the cathedral for the first hour
Why it works. La Seu is the island's one steady line, and cruise mornings double it. The first hour is the time for the light through the east rose window. The view of the cathedral from the seafront costs nothing at any hour.
Do this. Book the cathedral entry before you travel and take the opening slot. On a ship day, do not put La Seu in the late morning.

Old town and coves before 10:30, or after 17:00
Why it works. The lanes between the cathedral and Placa Major carry every visitor in town, worst in the late morning on ship days. The famous coves are small and full by 11:00 in summer. The Sóller train fills its benches at midday in season; the early departures have room.
Do this. Walk the old town lanes early or evening, and look into every open patio doorway. Take the coves at opening or from 17:00; at Es Trenc, walk further along the sand than feels necessary. Take the first Sóller train out, and the bus back.

Why it works. Palma's crowd keeps to the cathedral quarter on cruise mornings, the famous coves in high summer and the Sóller train at midday. Bellver's pinewood above the bay, the Tramuntana villages of Fornalutx, Orient and Banyalbufar, and the far reaches of Es Trenc stay quiet.
Do this. Stay near Bellver's pinewood, a short way from the cathedral quarter, or in one of the Tramuntana villages off the coach loop. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.

Pack for sun and 10 rain days
