Watch the season more than the holidays

Orlando's busy days follow the season more than any one country's holidays. The holiday drivers are the public holidays of Canada (19 days), the United States (14) and the UK (13). In school-holiday weeks every line in the parks runs at its maximum.

Before you book, check the public holidays of Canada, the United States and the UK for your dates. Every Orlando day page names the drivers of that day in its Why line.

Theme parks: book passes, be there at opening

The theme parks have the longest lines in Orlando. Entry needs a park reservation, the skip-the-line passes come in tiers, and in school-holiday weeks every line runs at its maximum. The headline rides are fullest from 10:00 to 16:00.

Book your park tickets and passes before you travel. Be at the gate at opening and go to the headline ride first, take a midday break, and come back for the last two hours.

Wheel at weeknight dusk, springs and Kennedy at opening

The wheel at ICON Park and the attractions on International Drive are busiest in the evening. The car parks of the springs are full by the middle of the morning on hot weekends. At Kennedy Space Center the bus tours and the Atlantis building draw the school-holiday crowds, and a launch day changes everything.

Ride the wheel at dusk on a weeknight, not at the weekend. Go to the springs midweek or arrive before the gates close; a kayak upstream leaves the swimmers behind in minutes. At Kennedy, enter at opening, take the bus tour first, then Atlantis.

Give a Busy day in Orlando a plan

In the next 30 days Orlando has no Busy or Packed days; December, March, April and July have them on every day. On such a day the order matters more than the list. Every Busy or Packed day page comes with three plans, with the hours to go and the tickets to book.

One day, the big sights when you have one day. Start early, one ticket when you want to spend little. The quiet side when you would rather have Winter Park and the springs than the lines.

Know the Packed months: December and March

Skip December, March, April and July if you can. Check the day pages for the marathon weekend in January and for EDC Orlando, 6 to 8 November, before you book.

Sleep near Winter Park's brick avenues

The Orlando crowd keeps to the park headline rides in the middle of the morning, the International Drive strip in the evening, and the spring car parks on hot weekends. Winter Park's brick avenues, the springs midweek and Lake Eola's downtown loop stay quiet.

Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The city page names them and links to hotels there.

Lunch in Winter Park on a weekday

Winter Park, with its brick avenues and the Tiffany glass of the Morse museum, is gently busy at weekend brunch. On a weekday morning it is quiet.

Take a weekday morning: the boat tour on the lakes, the museum, then a long lunch on Park Avenue.
