Book the first ferry to the Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island have the longest lines in New York City. Security screening, ferry capacity and two islands make it half a day. Crown tickets sell out months ahead. Midday boats load like rush hour. At the Battery, the security tents are worst from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.
Book the first ferry from the Battery, with security done by nine in the morning. If you only want the view, the Staten Island Ferry passes the statue and is free; spend the saved hours in the harbor museums.
First hour on the decks, the Met after four
Every observation deck runs timed entries, and sunset is the slot everyone wants. The Brooklyn Bridge promenade is photo-dense from mid-morning. The Met's steps hold the crowd; after four it is a different museum. MoMA is tightest at the famous canvases on weekend middays.

Check the ship days: 14 in October
New York City is a cruise port, but ships are not its main driver. Ships call on 55 days in the coming year. October has 14 call days, September 2026 11 and November 6. There are no calls in February or March. From April to August there are 3 or 4 a month.
Before you book, open the ships page for your dates. On a ship day, take the first ferry to the statue and keep the decks for the first hour.
Sleep near Central Park's Ramble
New York City's crowd keeps to Times Square in the evenings, the Battery's security tents, the Brooklyn Bridge promenade and the shopping grid from Broadway to West Broadway on a Saturday. Central Park's Ramble and North Woods, the outer-borough waterfronts, the Cloisters with Fort Tryon and Roosevelt Island stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The outer-borough waterfronts, such as Brooklyn Bridge Park's piers and Long Island City, have the skyline views with mostly local people around. The city page links to hotels there.
Pack for sunrise walks and rain
In September New York City has about 25 °C by day and rain on about 10 days. The tips above ask for a first ferry, a sunrise on the bridge and a lot of walking.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.
