Book Pompeii's first entry, and slots for the underground
Pompeii has gate lines and tour groups until mid-afternoon; then it empties. Napoli Sotterranea and the San Gennaro catacombs move in guided groups, so the tour schedule is the limit, not a line. The Sansevero chapel has small rooms and needs a booked slot.
Book a timed ticket for Pompeii's earliest entry; walk straight past the Forum to the far houses and work back. Or go at 14:00 for the last hours. Book the underground and the chapel rather than walking up at weekends.
Spaccanapoli before 10:30, Vomero at sunset
Spaccanapoli and San Gregorio Armeno are fullest from 11:00 to 18:00; the crib-makers' lane is the tightest squeeze, and cruise groups add to it. The National Archaeological Museum is quietest in the morning and closed on Tuesdays. The Lungomare takes the evening walk without strain.
Walk Spaccanapoli before 10:30, for the workshops and the churches. Do the museum in the morning, on any day but Tuesday. Take the funicular up to Vomero for sunset from the castle ramparts, then come down for dinner on the waterfront.

Sleep in Vomero or near the Lungomare
Naples' crowd keeps to Spaccanapoli and San Gregorio Armeno from late morning, to the pizza landmarks at meal times and to the Sansevero chapel. Vomero, the hill quarter above the funiculars, and the Lungomare, the seafront mile, stay quiet.

The famous pizza doorways have waits of an hour at peak meal hours. The Lungomare takes the evening walk without strain, and the terrace of Vomero looks over the whole city at sunset.

Pack for heat, stone streets and 9 rain days
