Book May or October, not July or August
July and August are Mykonos's peak. August is Busy or Packed on all 31 days, 23 of them Packed; July on 30 of 31, 17 Packed. June has 27 Busy or Packed days out of 30. May has 13 out of 31 with 2 Packed; October has 5 out of 31 and no Packed day.

Know whose school holidays fill the island
Mykonos fills when its visitors are on school holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French on 176, Dutch on 132. Public holidays in Germany, Italy, Greece, the UK and France add 11 to 19 days each. Sunday 15 August 2027, the Dormition of the Virgin, is Packed.

Take the first boat to Delos
Delos is 30 minutes by boat, and the morning departures put everyone on the island at the same time. The site is large enough to take it. The groups hold the agora; beyond the theatre the island empties, even when the boats have just come in.
Take the first boat out. Walk beyond the theatre while the groups are in the agora, and climb Mount Kynthos for the view over the Cyclades. If you want a guide, book the Delos guided day trip.
Chora before 11:00, sunset seats an hour early
Chora's lanes, Matoyianni and the seafront, are at their worst from mid-afternoon to sunset, when the cruise passengers are in town. In the morning the shops are opening and the lanes are empty. At Little Venice and the windmills of Kato Mili, the two hours around sunset are full; seats go an hour ahead.
Walk Chora before 11:00. See the windmills in the early morning, when they are empty. If you want the sunset at Little Venice, take a table an hour early. On the south beaches, go before noon or book a sunbed.
Give a cruise afternoon on Mykonos a plan

Check the ship days: every day in May
Mykonos is a cruise port on 220 days of the year. May has a ship on all 31 days, July on 30, June and August on 29, October on 28. No ships call in January or February. The cruise crowd is in Chora's lanes from mid-afternoon to sunset.
Open the ship calendar for your dates. On a ship day, have Chora in the morning, spend the afternoon in Ano Mera or on a north beach, and come back after sunset.
Sleep in Ano Mera or near the north beaches
The crowd on Mykonos keeps to Chora and Little Venice from afternoon to sunset, and to the Paradise and Super Paradise beach clubs from early afternoon. Ano Mera, the second town around a monastery square, is quiet on any day. Agios Sostis and the north beaches have no reservations and no music.
Stay in Ano Mera in the interior, or near Agios Sostis and the north beaches, away from Chora's afternoon. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.
Lunch in Ano Mera, sunset table an hour early
Ano Mera has taverna tables on its monastery square, and it is quiet while Chora has its afternoon crush. At Little Venice the seafront bars are full in the hour before sunset on cruise afternoons; seats go an hour ahead.
Have lunch on the square in Ano Mera on a Busy day. If you want a sunset drink at Little Venice, sit down an hour before sunset. On the south beaches, the beds are reserved in season; book one or go north for free sand.
Pack for sun, boats and 26 °C
In September Mykonos has about 26 °C by day and rain on about 1 day. The tips above ask for early walks in Chora, a boat to Delos, a climb up Mount Kynthos and afternoons on the beach.
Bring shoes for the lanes and the climb, a water bottle, and a charged power bank for tickets and boat times. Leave the umbrella at home.
