How to avoid crowds in Munich

Come in April, the mildest of the quiet months
Munich has no Busy or Packed days from December to April, and November has 1. February is Calm on all 28 days, but about 8 °C by day with rain on 13 days. April is milder, about 14 °C, and Calm on 19 of its 30 days.
Pick your dates from Munich's year map. Three recommended weeks of the year fall between 5 and 25 April: no Busy days, and warmer than the winter months. For the Christkindlmarkt, come between 20 November and 24 December; none of its days is Busy.

Watch the German school holidays and the Oktoberfest
Munich fills when Germany is on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year and German public holidays on 19. No other country's school holidays are on the list. The Oktoberfest adds 16 Packed days from 19 September to 4 October 2026.

Marienplatz: see the chimes once, then go up
Marienplatz has the densest crowd in Munich. It fills for the 11:00 and 12:00 chimes of the Glockenspiel and stays dense until the evening. The lift up the town-hall tower is the way above it that most people overlook.
Watch the Glockenspiel once, from the back of the square. Then take the tower lift, or walk into the lanes of the Viktualienmarkt. Come before 10:30 or after 18:00 if you want the square itself.
St Peter's tower early, the Residenz from late morning
The tower of St Peter's has the best view over the old town; climb it early on a clear day. The Residenz, with its ninety rooms, does not jam; late morning onward works, and it needs two hours. The beer gardens fill from 17:00.
Climb the tower in the morning. Give the Residenz two hours and add the Cuvillies theatre, which most tickets leave out. Take a table at the Chinese Tower before the evening rush. Keep Nymphenburg and the lakes for a weekday.
Give a Packed day in Munich a plan

One day, the big sights is for a single day with booked tickets. Start early, one ticket is for a small budget. The quiet side is for a day in the English Garden, the galleries or at Nymphenburg.
Oktoberfest: 16 Packed days from 19 September
The Oktoberfest runs from Saturday 19 September to Sunday 4 October 2026 and every one of its 16 days is Packed. The Munich Marathon on Sunday 11 October is Packed too. July is Packed on all 31 days and August on 29. In those weeks the centre runs at capacity.
If you come for the Oktoberfest, book early and take a weekday. If you do not, come after 4 October or before 19 September. Nymphenburg and the lakes are the answer on the heaviest days.

Sleep near the English Garden's depths
Munich's crowd keeps to Marienplatz at the chimes, the famous beer hall every night of the year, and the Kaufingerstrasse pedestrian mile. The depths of the English Garden beyond the surfers' bridge, the Pinakothek quarter with its three galleries, and the canals and park of Nymphenburg stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. Nymphenburg can be reached by tram. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.
Beer gardens from 17:00, the famous hall once
The famous beer hall is full every night of the year, with tour groups coming and going. The gardens where the city drinks, the Augustiner-Keller and the Hirschgarten, take thousands of people without a reservation. The gardens fill from 17:00.
See the famous hall once. Then drink in a garden, where the benches are shared. Take a table at the Chinese Tower in the English Garden before the evening rush, or eat in the lanes of the Viktualienmarkt.
Pack for Munich's rain days
In September Munich has about 20 °C by day and rain on about 11 days. The tips above ask for early mornings, a tower climb and a lot of walking.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a power bank so your phone keeps the tickets and maps alive, and a compact umbrella; you will need it.
