Ships drive Miami's busy days, not school holidays

Miami's busy days do not follow school holidays. The only holiday drivers are public holidays: Canada's on 19 days of the year and the United States' on 14. Cruise ships shape more of the year: they call on 177 days. Weekends are busier than weekdays.

Do not plan around school holidays here. Check the ships page for your dates and keep to weekdays where you can. Every Miami day page names the reasons behind a Busy day in its Why line.

Deco district at dawn, airboats in the morning

Ocean Drive is busy around the clock; evenings and event weekends are its fullest. At dawn the Deco district is empty. Airboat operators run by departure, and the Anhinga Trail boardwalk is at its best at opening, when the wildlife is out. The bay cruise loads steadily; the weekend sandbars fill boat-to-boat.

Walk the Art Deco district at dawn or in the morning light. Take a morning airboat, or be at the Anhinga Trail at opening. Take the bay cruise in the morning. For calm sand, go to Key Biscayne's lighthouse beach instead of the weekend sandbars.

Sleep near Key Biscayne's lighthouse end

Miami's crowd keeps to Ocean Drive's show blocks in the evenings and on event weekends, Wynwood at weekends and the weekend sandbars. Key Biscayne's lighthouse end, the Deco district at dawn and Matheson Hammock's atoll pool stay quiet.

Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. Key Biscayne's lighthouse end is state-park sand past the causeway crowds. Matheson Hammock's atoll pool is a lagoon ringed by mangroves, south of the Grove. The city page links to hotels there.
