Le Panier, the old quarter, draws a steady stroll rather than a crush. Its only tight hours are cruise-day afternoons. The baroque courtyard of the Vieille Charite is its calm centre.

Coaches and the tourist train bring their groups to Notre-Dame de la Garde at midday; the basilica itself never has a long line. The Mucem's rooftop walkways and the gardens of Fort Saint-Jean are free and rarely full. Chateau d'If sailings fill on summer days.
Walk or take the bus up to the basilica in the morning. Do the fort's gardens and bridges at sunset. For Chateau d'If, take a morning boat with tickets bought ahead in season; the same ticket covers the Frioul islands.

Fish market at eight, pastis at 18:00
The Vieux-Port has two good hours. The fish market on the quayside is at eight in the morning. From 18:00 the quays fill for pastis hour, every evening. The port never closes anyone out.
Go to the fish market at eight. Take your evening drink on the quays from 18:00, or watch the sunset from the Corniche Kennedy benches, which are long enough for everyone.
Pack for sun, boats and early hikes
In September Marseille has about 25 °C by day and rain on about 6 days. July reaches about 28 °C with rain on about 1 day. The tips above ask for early starts, boat rides and hikes at first light.
Bring shoes you can hike in, a charged phone or power bank for tickets and maps, water for the calanques and something against the sun. In summer an umbrella can stay at home.
