Book the Picasso Museum for the morning
The Picasso Museum has steady queues, and an advance ticket takes you past them. The Carmen Thyssen and the Pompidou rarely have a queue at all. The other line in town is at the Alcazaba gate; it is longest at mid-morning, when coaches and cruise groups arrive together.

Alcazaba at opening, Gibralfaro after 17:00
The Alcazaba gate has the one real line in town, longest at mid-morning. The Alcazaba is best at opening, in the cool; the Gibralfaro castle above it by the ramparts path in the late afternoon. The cathedral lanes and Calle Larios fill for the paseo every evening and at midday on ship days.
Go to the Alcazaba at opening or after 17:00. Walk up to Gibralfaro by the ramparts path in the late afternoon, or take the bus up and walk down. Do the cathedral and the lanes in the morning; join the paseo in the evening.
Give a ship day in Malaga a plan

Sleep in Pedregalejo or El Palo
Malaga's crowd keeps to Calle Larios and the cathedral lanes in the evening, the Alcazaba gate at mid-morning and the Atarazanas market on a Saturday. Pedregalejo and El Palo, the old fishing barrios to the east, the Muelle Uno port walk and the Gibralfaro ramparts path stay quiet.

Market before noon, espetos for lunch on a weekday
The Atarazanas market runs in the morning and is closed on Sundays; Saturday is its peak. The tapas counters at its edge are a standing lunch. In Pedregalejo the grills smoke over old fishing boats; the espetos beaches are busiest on Sundays.
Go to Atarazanas before noon, hungry, and not on a Sunday. Eat espetos for lunch in Pedregalejo on a weekday. If you want a guide, book the old town tapas walk.
Pack for 28 °C and a climb
In September Malaga has about 28 °C by day and rain on about 4 days. The tips above ask for an opening-hour start at the Alcazaba, a climb to Gibralfaro and evenings on foot.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a water bottle for the climb, and a charged power bank for tickets and maps. You can leave the umbrella at home.
