- The Prado has steady lines for Velazquez and Goya. A timed ticket walks past them. Book a morning slot; the free evening hours pull the day's densest crowd into the last two hours.

Come in February or March, or in August
Madrid has no Busy or Packed days in February, March, November and August. January has 30 Calm days and 1 Packed one, Tuesday 5 January, the Three Kings Parade. August is the summer exception: 29 Calm days, but about 34 °C by day.

Take August or November instead of October and July
October is Packed on all 31 days. July is Busy or Packed on all 31, June on 30 and May on 29. Right between them, August has no Busy or Packed days. Right after October, November has 30 Lively days.
If summer is the only time you can travel, book August and plan for about 34 °C. For mild weather with no Busy days, book November, with about 14 °C. The month pages show each month week by week.

Book a morning slot for the Prado
The Prado has the longest lines in Madrid. Velazquez and Goya draw steady lines, and a timed ticket walks past them. The free evening hours pull the day's densest crowd into the museum's last two hours.
Book a morning slot before you travel and go straight to Las Meninas, before the groups gather. Skip the free hours unless you have to save the money.
Sol at dawn, Royal Palace at the first slot
Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor are full from 11:00 to past midnight; at dawn they are empty. The Royal Palace runs on timed entry, and on Wednesday the changing of the guard fills the courtyard. The room with Guernica is the one pinch point of the Reina Sofia.
Take the first slot at the Royal Palace, then the Sabatini gardens and the cathedral crypt while the line grows behind you. See Guernica at opening or between 14:00 and 16:00. Take the Retiro on a weekday morning; Sunday afternoon is its full day.
Give a Packed day in Madrid a plan

One day, the big sights is for a single day with booked slots. Start early, one ticket is for a small budget. The quiet side is for a day of parks, convent lanes and Goya's hermitage.
October is Packed on all 31 days
October is Packed on every day, July on 17 days and May on 10. The Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix makes 11 to 13 September 2026 Packed. Single Packed days: 31 December, the San Silvestre Vallecana run; 5 January, the Three Kings Parade; 15 May, San Isidro; 5 June, the Champions League Final.
The Plaza Mayor Christmas Market runs from 27 November to 31 December and is Lively on 34 of its days; only 31 December is Packed. Check the day pages for the single Packed days, including a city run on Sunday 25 April, before you book.

Sleep a few stops from Sol
Madrid's crowd keeps to Sol and the arcades of the Plaza Mayor, the San Miguel market, and Cava Baja on Sunday afternoons. The long avenues of the Retiro, the convent lanes two minutes off the Plaza Mayor, San Antonio de la Florida with Goya's frescoes, and the Campo del Moro with Madrid Rio stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The city page names them and links to hotels there.
Tapas at nine, Cava Baja not on Sunday afternoon
The tapas streets fill every night on the Spanish clock: Cava Baja in La Latina, Malasana and Chueca. On Sunday, after the Rastro market, Cava Baja has the densest vermut hour in the city. The San Miguel market is the densest single room in Madrid at most hours.
Eat at nine, which is early for Madrid, to get a table. Or stand at the bar, as the city does. Keep Cava Baja for a weekday evening.
Pack for Madrid's early starts and late nights
In September Madrid has about 26 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for dawn in the squares, booked slots and a lot of walking.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a power bank so your phone keeps the tickets and maps alive, and a compact umbrella.
