Watch the Canadian and American public holidays
Why it works. Los Angeles has no school-holiday driver in its forecast. Its holiday drivers are the public holidays of Canada, on 19 days of the year, and of the United States, on 14. Beyond that, the summer itself fills the city: June, July and August are Busy or Packed on every day.

Griffith: weekday morning, or hike up for sunset
Why it works. Griffith Observatory has the biggest crowd in Los Angeles. The terraces gather the whole city at sunset, and the real line is the parking: by late afternoon the cars back down the hill. The jam lasts the two hours around sunset.
Do this. Drive up on a weekday morning, when the terraces and telescopes are quiet. Or hike up for sunset and walk down after dark; a guided hike is the ticket for that.

Getty at opening, studio tour booked, the Broad reserved
Why it works. The Getty Center absorbs its visitors; reserve the parking slot and go at opening or in the late afternoon. The studio tours run on booked trams and sell their mornings first. The Broad's free tickets go weeks ahead, and its standby line wraps the block most days. Hollywood's star blocks are worst at midday.
Do this. Book the studio tour and give Hollywood Boulevard twenty minutes. Reserve the Broad, or join the standby line at opening. Bike the strand between Santa Monica and Venice in the morning; the Venice boardwalk is dense on weekend afternoons.

Give a Busy day in Los Angeles a plan
Why it works. In the next 30 days Los Angeles has 20 Busy or Packed days. On such a day the order of the sights matters more than the list. Every Busy or Packed day page comes with three plans, with the hours to go and the tickets to book.
Do this. One day, the big sights when you have one day. Start early, one ticket when you want to spend little. The quiet side when you would rather have the Getty's gardens and the coast than the lines.

Why it works. Downtown, the counters of Grand Central market take everyone, while the Broad next to it has a standby line that wraps the block most days.
Do this. Eat at the market on a weekday midday. The walk between Disney Hall, the Broad and the market is free and little used.

Pack for heat, a hike and long distances
Why it works. In September Los Angeles has about 31 °C by day and rain on about 3 days. The tips above ask for a hike up to Griffith at sunset, a morning bike ride on the strand and early starts.
Do this. Bring shoes you can hike in, a hat and a water bottle, and a charged phone or power bank for tickets, parking slots and maps. You can leave the umbrella at home.
