Come in January, or in June for summer
Why it works. Lisbon has no Busy days in January and 29 Calm days out of 31. February has 1 Busy day, December 4 and March 6. In summer, June has 10 Busy or Packed days out of 30 and 12 Calm days; July and August have 19 each.
Do this. Pick your dates on Lisbon's year map. If you want summer, take June. If you want the quietest Lisbon, take January or February, about 14 to 17 °C by day.

Lisbon: trade Wed 21 Oct for Tue 20 Oct
Why it works. In Lisbon a Packed day can sit right next to a Lively one. Sunday 6 September 2026 is Packed because of the Portuguese and German school holidays; Monday 7 September is Lively.
Do this. Wed 21 Oct is Packed in Lisbon; Tue 20 Oct is Calm. Move the visit by a day and the same city is quieter.

Tip 3
Take November or June instead of October
Why it works. October is Lisbon's busiest month: 23 Busy or Packed days out of 31, 14 of them Packed, and 26 ship days. The EDP Lisbon Marathon on 10 and 11 October adds two Packed days. November has 8 Busy or Packed days out of 30; the Web Summit, 9 to 12 November, takes 4 of them.
Do this. If you want autumn, take November and avoid the Web Summit days. For summer, take June, but not 12 and 13 June, the Festas de Lisboa. The month pages show each month week by week.

Watch the school holidays of Germany, France and Portugal
Why it works. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French on 176 and Portuguese on 121. Spanish public holidays add 29 days and Portuguese public holidays 17.
Do this. Before you book, check the school holidays of Germany, France and Portugal, and the public holidays of Spain, for your dates. Every Lisbon day page names them in its Why line.

Tip 5
Book a time slot for the Jeronimos monastery
Why it works. Belem has three lines in one riverside mile. The line for the Jeronimos monastery is the longest. The tower's line is capped and slow. The bakery's line for custard tarts moves fast all day. Belem is worst from 10:00 to 16:00 and closed on Mondays.
Do this. Book Jeronimos ahead or be there at opening. See the tower from outside unless the day is Calm. Take the tarts from the takeaway line and eat them on the grass.

Castle at the first slot, Tram 28 before 09:00
Why it works. The Castelo de Sao Jorge has timed tickets; the first slots give you empty ramparts. Alfama's stairs jam late in the morning on ship days. Tram 28 is standing room only from mid-morning, and the lines at the stops last longer than the ride.
Do this. Take the castle's first slot and walk down through Alfama before the ship groups climb it. Ride Tram 28 before 09:00 or after 20:00 from an end stop. Skip the Santa Justa lift: walk up through the Carmo ruins for the same view.

Give a Busy day in Lisbon a plan
Why it works. Lisbon has 23 Busy or Packed days in October and 19 in each of July and August. For each of them the day page offers three plans, each with the tickets it needs and the hours to go.
Do this. Pick One day, the big sights if you have one day; Start early, one ticket if you want to spend little; The quiet side if you want to keep away from the lines.

Ships call on 228 days: check yours
Why it works. Lisbon is a cruise port. Ships call on 228 days in the year, in every month. October and April have 26 ship days each; February has 9. On a ship day, Alfama's stairs jam late in the morning.
Do this. Check the ships page for your dates. On a ship day, take the castle's first slot, then cross the river: the ferry to Cacilhas takes 10 minutes and the south bank has room.

Sleep near the Gulbenkian
Why it works. Lisbon's crowd keeps to Belem's monument mile, Tram 28's route and stops, Alfama on cruise mornings and the Santa Justa lift. The Gulbenkian and its gardens, Graca and Sao Vicente on the hill above Alfama, Cacilhas on the south bank and the Azulejo museum east of the centre stay quiet.
Do this. Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. Graca keeps neighbourhood hours above Alfama. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.

Eat at 13:00 sharp or after 15:00
Why it works. The benches of the Time Out Market fill at meal hours. LX Factory is busiest at weekends, and Sunday brunch there needs patience or an early start. In Belem, the bakery's line for custard tarts moves fast all day.
Do this. Eat at 13:00 sharp or at 15:00, or one neighbourhood over. Take the custard tarts from the takeaway line. Across the river, Cacilhas has seafood and the skyline view, 10 minutes by ferry.

Pack for sun, stairs and hills
Why it works. In September Lisbon has about 26 °C by day and rain on about 6 days. The tips above ask for early starts, the stairs of Alfama and a lot of walking between the hills.
Do this. Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, and a power bank for tickets and maps. An umbrella can stay at home in September.
