Kos: trade Sat 1 May for Fri 30 Apr
Why it works. On Kos the season turns at the end of September. Monday 28 September 2026 is Busy, like every day of that month. Thursday 1 October is Lively, like every day of October.
Do this. Sat 1 May is Busy in Kos; Fri 30 Apr is Lively. Move the visit by a day and the same city is quieter.

Tip 3
Kos: take May or October, not June to September
Why it works. June has 30 Busy days out of 30, July 31 Busy or Packed days out of 31, August 31 Packed days, and September is Busy on every day. May has 10 Busy days out of 31 and 21 Lively ones. October has 31 Lively days and no Busy ones.
Do this. If you want the sea season, book May, with about 23 °C by day, or October, with about 24 °C and rain on about 4 days. The month pages show each month week by week.

Kos fills with the German and Dutch school holidays
Why it works. Kos fills when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, Dutch school holidays on 132. Greek public holidays add 14 days; Sunday 15 August 2027, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is Packed.

In Zia, book a table or leave before sunset
Why it works. Zia is the mountain village that every coach on the island drives to for sunset. In the hour around sunset the lane of shops is single file. It is the most predictable crush on Kos, every evening in season.
Do this. Come in the late afternoon for the light and leave when the buses arrive. Or stay for the sunset and book a terrace table ahead. A jeep or village tour takes you there without the coach timetable.

Tip 6
The Asklepion at opening, Kos Town before lunch
Why it works. The Asklepion on its terraced hillside is quiet at the edges of the day and busiest from about 10:00 to 14:00, when the excursion coaches are there. The ruins in Kos Town, the Neratzia castle, the agora and the Roman villas, have no lines; the problem there is the midday sun.
Do this. Go to the Asklepion at opening or after 15:00 and climb to the top terrace for the view. Walk the sites in Kos Town in the morning cool; be done by lunch. Pass the Tree of Hippocrates by the castle bridge on the same walk.

Give a Busy day on Kos a plan
Why it works. From June to September every day on Kos is Busy or Packed. Every Busy or Packed day page comes with three ready plans. Each plan lists the tickets you need and the hours to be at each place.
Do this. One day, the big sights is for a single day with an early start. Start early, one ticket is for a small budget. The quiet side is for a day on the bike path and the far western beaches.

Why it works. Kos is a port, but a small one. Cruise ships call on 11 days of the year, never more than 1 ship at a time. The months with a call are September, October and November 2026, and April, May, June, July and September 2027. July has 2 ship days.
Do this. Check the ship page for your dates if you want to be sure. On Kos the coaches and the school holidays fill the island, not the ships.

Sleep away from the harbour front
Why it works. The crowd on Kos gathers at the Asklepion in the coach hours, in Zia at sunset, and along the harbour front bars in the evening in season. The coastal bike path, the ancient sites in Kos Town and the far western beaches, Kefalos bay and beyond, stay quiet.
Do this. Stay a little away from the harbour front, near the bike path or towards the western beaches. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.

Eat before the promenade fills
Why it works. The bars along the harbour front are packed in the evening in season. In Zia the terrace tables are taken for the sunset hour.
Do this. For dinner in Zia, book the terrace table ahead. In Kos Town, eat early or away from the harbour front, and join the promenade afterwards.

Pack for 28 °C and 2 rain days
Why it works. In September Kos has about 28 °C by day and rain on about 2 days. The midday sun is the problem, not the rain. The tips above ask for early starts and a bicycle.
Do this. Bring shoes you can walk and cycle in, a water bottle for the midday sun, and a power bank so your phone keeps the maps alive. An umbrella can stay at home.
