In Heraklion, take October or May, not July
Why it works. July and August are Busy or Packed on every day; August has 21 Packed days. June is close, with 21 Busy or Packed days out of 30. May has 16 out of 31, and October 9 out of 31. Orthodox Easter week, from 26 April to 2 May 2027, has 5 Packed days.

Heraklion fills with the German and French school holidays
Why it works. The busy days in Heraklion follow the school holidays of three countries. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French on 176 and Dutch on 132. Greek public holidays add 14 days.

Book a time slot for Knossos
Why it works. Knossos has the longest lines in Heraklion: a ticket line, cruise groups and heat, all from late morning. The worst hours are 10:30 to 15:00. Timed e-tickets exist.
Do this. Buy your ticket ahead. Go in the first hour, when the painted halls are at their best, or in the last two hours, after 16:00.

Knossos at opening, museum at midday, market before noon
Why it works. Tour groups sweep the highlight rooms of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum in mid-morning; at midday it is cool and calmer. The Morosini fountain square and the market lanes are thickest on cruise mornings. The Koules fortress and the harbour are never gated.
Do this. Do Knossos at opening and the museum at midday; one ticket covers both. Take your coffee at the fountain early and the market before noon. Walk the mole past Koules at sunset.

Sleep near the Venetian walls
Why it works. Heraklion's crowd keeps to Knossos in the late morning, the Morosini fountain and the market lanes, and the museum's fresco rooms at group hours. The Venetian walls with the Martinengo bastion, the mole past Koules, and Archanes with the Peza vineyards stay quiet.

Why it works. The market lanes and the Morosini fountain square carry the city's foot traffic, and cruise mornings make it thicker. The wine villages start 20 minutes south: Archanes and the Peza vineyards have tasting rooms and village squares that never fill.
Do this. Have your coffee at the fountain early and walk the market before noon. Book a tasting in the wine country for the afternoon of a ship day.

Pack for heat, not rain
Why it works. In September Heraklion has about 28 °C by day and rain on about 4 days. Knossos has sun and heat from late morning, and the tips above ask for early starts.
Do this. Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a power bank for tickets and maps, and water for Knossos. An umbrella can stay at home.
