Take June instead of August

Book a free time slot for the Elbphilharmonie Plaza
The Plaza of the Elbphilharmonie is free, but it runs on timed tickets. On weekends the line forms at the escalator. Sunset slots go first. On a weekday morning you can walk up without a wait.
Book the Plaza slot online, for nothing, before you travel; take a sunset slot if you can get one. Or walk up early on a weekday. Concert tickets are a separate booking, made long ahead.
Ferry 62 before 11:00, the Fischmarkt early on Sunday
Line 62, the public ferry, has its bow rails packed on weekend afternoons; the Landungsbrucken piers are worst then too. The Fischmarkt runs on Sunday from 06:00 to 09:00: at 8 it is at full voice, by 10 it is gone. The Michel's tower lift has short lines on weekends.
Ride Line 62 before 11:00 or in the evening, or board one pier upstream for a seat. Set the alarm for the Fischmarkt. Take the Michel tower in the morning. For the Speicherstadt, be at the Wasserschloss bridge at blue hour, before the tripods.
Pick a plan for a Busy day in Hamburg
Hamburg has Busy or Packed days in every month, most at weekends: 42 weekend days in the forecast are Packed and 40 are Busy. On those days the order matters more than the list. Every Busy or Packed day page offers three plans, each with the tickets it needs and the hours to go.
Choose One day, the big sights when you have a single day. Choose Start early, one ticket when you want to pay for one ticket only. Choose The quiet side when you want no lines at all.
Ships call on 125 days; December has 14
Hamburg is a port with ships on 125 days in the coming 365, in every month. December has 14 ship days, October and May 12, August 11, with up to 3 ships on one day. The Hamburger Hafengeburtstag, the port anniversary, runs from 7 to 9 May 2027 and is Packed on all 3 days.
Check the ships page before you pick your dates. The Hafengeburtstag days are Packed; if the port party is not what you came for, pick other dates. On a ship day, ride Line 62 early.
Sleep near the Alster or out in Blankenese
Hamburg's crowd keeps to the Landungsbrucken piers on weekend afternoons, the Plaza escalator at weekends and the Reeperbahn at weekend midnight. The Alster shores, 10 minutes from the crush, and Blankenese's stair quarter, an S-Bahn ride west, stay quiet. HafenCity's outer quays lie past the point where the crowds turn back.
Stay near one of the quiet places, a few stops from the piers. The city page names them and links to hotels there.
Fischmarkt at 8, Christmas market on a Calm day
The Historic Christmas Market on Rathausmarkt runs from 23 November to 23 December; 18 of its days are Calm, 7 Busy and 4 Packed. The Fischmarkt on Sunday morning is half market, half after-party. It is at full voice at 8 and gone by 10.
Take the Christmas market on one of its 18 Calm days; the day pages show which they are. For the Fischmarkt, be on the riverfront at 8 on Sunday, or stay up for it.

Pack an umbrella: September has rain on 10 days
In September Hamburg has about 20 °C by day and rain on about 10 days. The tips above ask for early ferries, a Sunday dawn at the Fischmarkt and a lot of walking along the water.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone or power bank for tickets and the Plaza slot, and a compact umbrella.
