- The Marché de Noël on the quay runs from 20 November to 24 December. 11 of its days are Calm and 19 are Lively; only 5 are Busy or Packed.

Book the CERN tour weeks ahead
Geneva has few lines, but two places need a booking. The guided tours at CERN release a limited number of slots, and they are gone weeks ahead; the exhibitions of the Science Gateway can be visited without a ticket. Visits to the UN Palais run on guided schedules with an ID check.
Book the CERN tour as soon as your dates are fixed. Take a morning tour at the UN Palais and bring your passport. The Ariana ceramics museum next to it is quiet.
The lakefront in the morning, the towers before noon
The big water jet on the lakefront never has a queue; in the morning the water is still and there are rainbows in the plume. The towers of St Peter's Cathedral are best before noon. The Paquis baths fill on hot afternoons. The Saleve cable car has lines only on clear weekends.
Walk the lakefront first thing. Climb the cathedral towers before noon for the view over the lake. Swim at the Bains des Paquis in the morning. Ride the yellow mouette ferries as transport. Save the Saleve for a clear weekday.
Give a Busy day in Geneva a plan
From May to August every day in Geneva is Busy or Packed. Every Busy or Packed day page comes with three ready plans. Each plan lists the tickets you need and the hours to be at each place.
One day, the big sights is for a single day with booked tours. Start early, one ticket is for a small budget. The quiet side is for a day of parks, lanes and lake villages.
Know the Packed days: July, August, two race weekends
July is Packed on all 31 days and August on 26. Outside summer the Packed days come with races: a city run on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December 2026, and the Generali Geneve Marathon on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 May 2027. A historic festival from 11 to 13 December is Busy.
For the Marché de Noël with fewer people, come on a weekday between 20 November and 24 December, away from the first two weekends of December. Check the day pages for the marathon weekend before you book May.

Sleep near the diplomatic shore's parks
Geneva's crowd keeps to the Rues Basses, Rue du Rhone and Rue du Marche, at lunch and on Saturdays, and to the Paquis baths on hot afternoons. The parks along the diplomatic shore, from the botanical garden to the Perle du Lac, Carouge, the high lanes of the old town and Hermance stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. Carouge is 10 minutes away by tram. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.
Coffee on the Bourg-de-Four, lunch off the shopping streets
The cafes on the Bourg-de-Four in the old town are good at any hour. The Rues Basses, Rue du Rhone and Rue du Marche, are at their fullest in the lunch hours and on Saturdays.
Take your coffee on the Bourg-de-Four. At lunch, walk up into the old town or out to Carouge instead of eating on the shopping streets.
Pack for Geneva's early starts
In September Geneva has about 22 °C by day and rain on about 9 days. The tips above ask for early mornings, a climb up the towers and a lot of walking.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a power bank so your phone keeps the tickets and maps alive, a compact umbrella, and your passport for the UN Palais.
