Frankfurt fills with the German and French school holidays
Frankfurt is busy when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French school holidays on 176. Public holidays in Germany (19 days), the United States (14), the UK (13) and France (11) add to that.

Romerberg before 10:00, or with a morning walking tour
The Romerberg has the most people in Frankfurt. The rebuilt half-timbered square is small: two coach groups fill it, and the coaches come at midday. The rebuilt lanes behind it take the overflow. In the Christmas market weeks, from 23 November to 22 December, the whole quarter becomes one event.
Come before 10:00 for an empty square, or book a walking tour of the old town for the morning. At midday, step into the lanes behind the square.
Stadel on a weekday morning, Main Tower before sunset
The Stadel has lines only for its blockbuster shows; its Sunday crowd is relaxed, and it is closed on Mondays. The Main Tower platform has a line for the lift at sunset, but on a clear day the wait is minutes, not hours. The Palmengarten is never strained.
See the Stadel on a weekday morning; the riverbank outside is free. Go up the Main Tower in the hour before sunset, booked or early. Keep the Palmengarten for any afternoon.
Give a Busy day in Frankfurt a plan

One day, the big sights when you have one day. Start early, one ticket when you want to spend little. The quiet side when you would rather have the river bank and the Palmengarten than the square.

Sleep near the Main's south bank
The Frankfurt crowd keeps to the Romerberg at midday, the Zeil on Saturday afternoons and Sachsenhausen's tavern lanes at night. The Main's south bank, the Palmengarten and the Gunthersburgpark with the Nordend cafes stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The city page names them and links to hotels there.
Cider taverns: take an early table at weekends
The cider taverns of Sachsenhausen fill every night with long tables and pitchers of apple wine. Weekend evenings run loud and full.
At weekends, take a table at 17:30. On a weekday the lanes are calmer. The Nordend cafes in the residential north have easy weekends.
Pack shoes, a power bank and an umbrella
In September Frankfurt has about 22 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for an early square, a weekday museum and a lot of walking along the river.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged phone or power bank for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.
