Book a timed ticket for Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle sells timed tickets. In August they sell out days ahead. The whole castle has one gate, reached over the esplanade, and the line there is worst from 10:00 to 15:00.
Book before you travel, without fail in festival season. Take the first slots of the day, or go after 15:00.
Royal Mile before 10:00, Calton Hill at dawn
The Royal Mile runs from the castle to the palace and is full all season; in August the Fringe turns it into a stage. Calton Hill is quiet by day and full of tripods at sunset. Holyrood Palace is comfortable in the mornings, with the quiet abbey ruin behind it.
Walk the Royal Mile early and step into the closes, the alleys off it. Climb Calton Hill at dawn, or at sunset with company. Do Arthur's Seat at dawn; the Salisbury Crags circuit gives the skyline for half the climb.

Sleep below the New Town or by the park
Edinburgh's crowd keeps to the castle esplanade and gate, the Royal Mile and the curve of Victoria Street. Holyrood Park, Dean Village with the Water of Leith, and the Botanics stay quiet. The New Town and Stockbridge are never crowded in the old town's sense.

Take Sunday to Stockbridge's market
Stockbridge has a Sunday market. The New Town around it, with its Georgian crescents and the Water of Leith walkway, is never crowded in the old town's sense.
Make Sunday your New Town day: the market in Stockbridge, then the Water of Leith walkway to Dean Village. No ticket is needed for any of it.
Pack for rain and early starts
In September Edinburgh has about 16 °C by day and rain on about 13 days. October has rain on about 18 days. The tips above ask for dawn climbs and early walks.
