Book a timed slot for the Book of Kells
Trinity College and the Book of Kells run on timed entry, and on summer days the slots sell out. The Long Room is quiet only in the first slots of the day. The cobbled squares outside need no ticket and stay open.
Book the Book of Kells timed entry before you travel and take the first slot. The Guinness Storehouse needs booking too: afternoon slots stack up even midweek, and the view bar at the top holds few people.
First slots at the Storehouse, mornings at the cathedrals
The Guinness Storehouse meters its visitors up 7 floors, and afternoon slots fill even midweek. Kilmainham Gaol admits by guided tour only; the slots are released ahead and go, and there is no way in on the day. Dublin Castle and the two medieval cathedrals let people in gently.

Give a Busy day in Dublin a plan

Dublin's crowd keeps to the cobbles of Temple Bar on Friday and Saturday nights, to Grafton Street in the afternoons and to the footbridge over the Liffey. The Georgian squares at Merrion and Fitzwilliam, the Phoenix Park and the Great South Wall walk stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The Dublin page names them and links to hotels there.
See Temple Bar before 20:00, then drink elsewhere
Temple Bar is at its fullest on Friday and Saturday nights, and the prices follow the crowd. Dubliners drink on Baggot Street and in the Liberties instead. Howth and Dun Laoghaire, at the two ends of the DART line, have a cliff walk and a pier with ice creams.
Look at Temple Bar early in the evening, before 20:00. Then walk to Baggot Street or the Liberties for the rest of the night. Take the DART to Howth on a clear weekday morning.
Pack for 18 °C and 13 rain days
In September Dublin has about 18 °C by day and rain on about 13 days. The tips above ask for early starts, a cliff walk at Howth and a long morning between the cathedrals.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a compact umbrella, and a charged power bank for timed tickets and DART times.
