How to avoid crowds in Cozumel

Come in October, May or September
Cozumel has no Busy or Packed days in October and May. September has 1, the Sunday of the IRONMAN 70.3. In the northern summer, June has 3 Busy days out of 30, July and August 8 each. These quiet months are also the wet ones: rain on about 18 to 21 days.

Take November or April instead of December to March
December has 27 Busy or Packed days out of 31, March 26, January 22 and February 19 out of 28. On both sides of that peak the numbers drop: November has 13 Busy or Packed days out of 30, April 5.
If winter is your season, book the second half of November or April. April also has the fewest rain days of the year, about 8. The month pages show each month week by week.
Cozumel fills with the Count the ships school holidays
No school holiday drives Cozumel's busy days. The only holiday drivers are public holidays: Canada on 19 days, the United States on 14, Mexico on 9. What fills the island is the number of cruise ships at the piers, and that changes from one day to the next.

Book the first boat to the reefs
The reefs of Palancar and Columbia lie in national-park water. The boats set how many people are on them. From 11:00 to 14:00 on ship days the snorkel boats crowd together on the easy reefs near the shore. The southern reefs need a longer boat ride and stay quiet.
Book the first departure of the morning. Choose a small group, and a boat that goes to the southern reefs by name rather than a general tour.
Beach clubs before 10:30, the waterfront after 15:00
The beach clubs and Chankanaab fill by late morning on ship days. The shops on the waterfront of San Miguel are fullest from 09:30 to 15:00 on days with three ships. The vans reach San Gervasio mid-morning; by two the Mayan shrine is quiet again.
Book a quieter beach club ahead, or use the free public beach between the clubs. Walk the waterfront after 15:00, when the ships call their passengers back. See San Gervasio at opening or after 14:00, on the way to the east side.
Use a ready plan on a ship day
From November to March most days on Cozumel are Busy or Packed. Every Busy or Packed day page comes with three ready plans. Each plan lists the tickets you need and the hours to be at each place.
One day, the big sights is for a single day with a booked boat. Start early, one ticket is for a small budget. The quiet side is for a day away from the piers, on the east side.

Cozumel is a cruise port. Ships call on 340 days of the year, in every month; in March on all 31 days. The busiest ship days bring 8 ships, in December, February and March. September has the fewest ship days, 21, then October with 27. All 57 Packed days of the year fall on weekdays.
Check the ship page for your dates. On a day with three or more ships, be on the water at the first departure and keep the waterfront for after 15:00. A weekend day is never Packed.
Sleep away from the piers
Cozumel's crowd keeps to the blocks in front of the piers and to the easy reefs at midday. The east side of the island, the southern reefs, the plaza and back streets of San Miguel, and the park at Punta Sur, with its lighthouse and lagoon, stay quiet.
Stay a little away from the piers, near one of the quiet places. The city page names them and links to hotels there.
Tacos two streets back, lunch on the east side
The front blocks of San Miguel belong to the ship passengers until 15:00. Two streets back there are tacos at any hour, and the plaza keeps its own pace. On the east side, the beach bars run on generators and have almost nobody.
Eat two streets back from the waterfront. Or rent a jeep, drive round the point and have lunch at a palapa on the east side. Swim only where the local people swim; the current is strong.
Pack for 31 °C and 19 rain days
In September Cozumel has about 31 °C by day and rain on about 19 days. The tips above ask for early boats and a day on the east side.
Bring shoes you can walk in, a power bank so your phone keeps the tickets and maps alive, and a compact umbrella for the rain days.
