Corfu fills with the German and French school holidays
Corfu is busy when its visitors are on holiday. German school holidays are a driver on 199 days of the year, French school holidays on 176, Dutch school holidays on 132. Public holidays in Germany, Italy, Greece, the UK and France add between 11 and 19 days each.

Old Town before 10:00 or in the evening
Corfu Old Town is where the most people are. Its Venetian lanes between the two fortresses were built for donkeys; on ship days cruise groups fill them from the late morning. The cafes under the Liston arcade look onto it all.
Take a walking tour of the old town in the morning, or walk it yourself before 10:00. Come back in the evening for the promenade on the Liston. On ship days, two turns off the main lanes the back streets stay quiet.
The Achilleion early or late, Paleokastritsa before 11:00
The Achilleion palace is on every island coach loop: its terraces are full from 10:00 to 15:00 on cruise days. Paleokastritsa's monastery and coves fill by midday in season. The Old Fortress has a short line in the middle of the morning; the New Fortress above town has almost nobody.
Go to the Achilleion at opening or in its final hour, when the gardens empty. Be at Paleokastritsa before 11:00; the grotto boats before noon get the calm sea. Do the Old Fortress early and the New Fortress at sunset.
Give a Busy day in Corfu a plan

Check the ship calendar for your dates. On a ship day, walk the Old Town before 10:00 or in the evening, go to the Achilleion in its first or last hour, and keep the villages of the north for the middle of the day.
Sleep near the back kantounia
The Corfu crowd keeps to the corridor from the port to the Liston, the Achilleion's terraces and Paleokastritsa's main cove at midday. The back lanes two turns off the main streets, the olive interior with Old Perithia, and the New Fortress ramparts stay quiet.
Stay near one of the quiet places, not on the corridor from the port to the Liston. The city page names them and links to hotels there.
Lunch in a village taverna on a heavy day
The cafes under the Liston arcade look onto the busiest lanes of the Old Town. In the olive interior, Old Perithia under Pantokrator has village tavernas and few visitors.
On a Busy or Packed day, take a hire car north and have lunch in a village. Keep the Liston for the evening promenade.
Pack for sun, and an umbrella for September
In September Corfu has about 27 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for early starts, a swim before 11:00 and a lot of walking on old lanes.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a hat and a water bottle, a charged phone or power bank for tickets and maps, and a compact umbrella.
