Nyhavn before 10:00, and book Tivoli for the evening
Nyhavn is a photo stop with no ticket: the quay is fullest in the afternoon and evening, and the canal boats load here. Tivoli has timed entry; weekend evenings and the summer nights, Halloween and Christmas seasons run it at capacity.
Come to Nyhavn before 10:00 for the light and board the first canal boat. Book Tivoli ahead for an evening in the festive seasons, or go on a weekday afternoon for the gardens themselves.
Rosenborg at opening, the harbour baths in the morning
Rosenborg has a modest line for the crown jewels. The changing of the guard at Amalienborg at noon gathers the one reliable crowd of the day. The baths at Islands Brygge fill on hot afternoons. Our Saviour's spire is busiest in the afternoon.
Do Rosenborg at opening and walk into the King's Garden after. Watch the guard change from the edge of the square, or skip it. Swim in the morning. Climb Our Saviour's spire before the afternoon. Take the morning train to the Louisiana on a weekday.

Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The Copenhagen page lists them and links to hotels near them.

The street-food halls at Refshaleoen fill on weekend evenings. Quayside tables at Nyhavn cost the most; one canal over, a drink costs about half.

Pack for Copenhagen's early starts and rain
In September Copenhagen has about 18 °C by day and rain on about 12 days. The tips above ask for early starts, a swim and a lot of walking.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a charged power bank for tickets and maps, a compact umbrella, and swimwear for the harbour baths.
